Samsung SDI is participating in ‘Interbattery Europe 2023’, which is being held in Munich, Germany from the 14th for three days.

Under the long-term vision of ‘realizing a sustainable and eco-friendly future society through differentiated technology,’ Samsung SDI is exhibiting products under the theme of ‘Sustainable Energy PRiMX & BoT.’

At this exhibition, Samsung SDI unveiled the expanding lineup of BoT (Battery of Things) through their battery brand PRiMX and showcased their differentiated technological competitiveness.

‘Interbattery Europe 2023’ is one of the exhibitions held as part of Europe’s largest energy show, ‘The Smarter E Europe.’ Over 2,200 global companies related to the energy industry are participating in ‘The Smarter E Europe,’ marking Samsung SDI’s ninth participation this year.

Samsung SDI highlighted the SBB (Samsung Battery Box) as its main product. The SBB, publicly unveiled for the first time overseas, is a pre-configured product that integrates ESS internal battery cells and modules into a single box form. The SBB can be immediately utilized once connected to the power grid at the installation site.

The SBB is equipped with Samsung SDI’s highest-capacity battery cells for ESS. This product applies Samsung SDI’s latest material technology, including high-nickel NCA cathodes that have been validated for performance and safety in electric vehicle battery cells, improving capacity by over 30% compared to existing batteries.

The total capacity of the SBB battery is 3.84MWh, capable of storing power at industry-leading levels. Considering that the average daily power consumption of a household in Germany is about 10kWh, it can support the daily power consumption of approximately 400 households.

Additionally, the ‘E5S (Energy Platform 5 Gen. for SBB)’ module and rack, featuring an optimal safety direct injection system and an improved water-cooled cooling system for thermal management efficiency, were also applied.

At the PRiMX & BoT zone, Samsung SDI introduced various technologies as a leading battery company, including solid-state batteries and next-generation lineups.

Samsung SDI’s solid-state batteries are characterized by unique solid electrolyte materials and innovative material technology that enhance lifespan through an anode-less technology. Ahead of completing the solid-state battery pilot line, Samsung SDI plans to conduct various tests to improve the completeness of solid-state battery development, starting with the production of prototype samples this year.

Moreover, Samsung SDI also displayed batteries being implemented in key applications such as electric vehicles, IT & wearable devices, power tools, and ESS, along with emerging products like NMX, LFP, and 46mm cylindrical batteries.

Samsung SDI has revealed plans to expand its product portfolio by preparing batteries based on cobalt-free concepts like NMX and LFP, aimed at entering the affordable electric vehicle market and the power-related ESS market. The 46mm cylindrical batteries are set to begin prototype production in the second half of the year at the pilot line established in Cheonan.

In the sustainability zone, Samsung SDI plans to introduce the eco-friendly story of batteries, efforts to create better batteries, and proactive activities for climate response, helping visitors understand sustainable energy. Visitors can also learn about Samsung SDI’s future environmental efforts through activities such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and carbon reduction initiatives.

Go Ju-young, marketing team leader of Samsung SDI’s large battery division, stated, “Samsung SDI is striving to secure differentiated technological competitiveness for sustainable energy,” and “We will strengthen our market leadership with an evolved new battery lineup.”
