Hyundai Mobis has been strengthening its future vehicle technology competitiveness by filing approximately 3,000 patents in key areas of future mobility over the past three years. Of these, 30% are patents related to eco-friendly vehicles, including electric cars. This illustrates Hyundai Mobis’s future business vision to evolve into a provider of electrified mobility platforms through enhanced company-wide research and development capabilities.
Recently, Hyundai Mobis announced the publication of its ‘Sustainability Report 2024’ on the 25th. Since 2010, Hyundai Mobis has been publishing an annual sustainability report to share various achievements in the areas of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) with key stakeholders.
According to the latest sustainability report, Hyundai Mobis applied for about 3,000 new patents related to core future vehicle technologies such as electrification, autonomous driving, and connectivity from 2021 to last year. This accounts for nearly 40% of the total number of new patents filed by Hyundai Mobis during the last three years (8,001 patents).
Among future technologies, the electrification sector particularly stands out. Out of the approximately 3,000 future vehicle technology patents filed in the last three years, over 950 pertain to eco-friendly vehicles, which is more than 30%. Notably, the number of patents filed in the eco-friendly vehicle sector rose from 210 in 2022 to 448 last year, more than doubling. In fact, Hyundai Mobis has secured patents related to battery temperature control systems for electric vehicles, integrated management systems for low and high-voltage batteries, and communication methods over the past three years.
Last year, Hyundai Mobis invested around 1.6 trillion Won just in research and development, accelerating its transformation into a leading company in future mobility technologies centered on electrification. Earlier last year, Hyundai Mobis established a comprehensive research center for electrification in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, leveraging it as a core base for developing next-generation electrification technologies.
To proactively respond to the expansion of the electric vehicle market, Hyundai Mobis is also expanding its new production bases both domestically and internationally. In the first half of this year, Hyundai Mobis is building a new plant in Spain to supply battery systems (BSA) to Volkswagen, and is establishing a new electric vehicle dedicated module plant in Ulsan, South Korea. Production bases for electrification parts currently being developed in North America and Indonesia are set to begin operations in the second half of this year.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis emphasized its commitment to concrete actions regarding ESG management, which is gaining increasing importance, in this year’s sustainability report. Hyundai Mobis selected eight key ESG topics, including ▲climate change response ▲energy use management ▲product circularity ▲supply chain sustainability management ▲product safety and quality assurance ▲corporate culture, and detailed the management status for each area in the report.
Hyundai Mobis structured the contents referencing new global reporting standards and expanded the scope of data disclosure on a consolidated basis to include overseas business sites and domestic subsidiaries. Furthermore, for the first time this year, Hyundai Mobis received third-party verification for greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) from its domestic and overseas business locations, as well as for greenhouse gas emissions from the supply chain (Scope 3), thereby enhancing transparency in its greenhouse gas management.
