Volvo is equipping its next-generation pure electric flagship SUV, the ‘EX90,’ with its first-ever bidirectional charging feature, set to make its global debut on November 9.

Bidirectional charging is a technology with the potential to make energy utilization cheaper, more efficient, and sustainable. It was developed to alleviate the strain on power grids due to increased electric demand as electrification expands, playing a crucial role in the green transition. This concept allows multiple electric vehicles to function as virtual power plants, providing the necessary power for daily living while on the move.

This capability enables charging during times of low demand and prices on the power grid, as well as saving stored energy for crucial situations. Moreover, it can supply power not only to one’s home but also to other electronic devices, and if compatible, support charging between different Volvo vehicles.

The Volvo Cars smartphone app, which includes smart charging features, automatically manages the entire charging process, designed with algorithms that limit charging or discharging to reduce battery performance degradation risks.

Olivier Loedel, Head of Volvo Cars’ Electrification Ecosystem, stated, “With bidirectional charging, you can use the battery in various ways, from charging an electric bike while out to powering outdoor cooking equipment for weekend camping trips. Additionally, it’s possible to supply power to your home during peak times when costs are highest,” adding that “the EX90 will bring new energy to your life in the future.”

Furthermore, bidirectional charging can support the grid in various ways depending on the energy market’s situation. For instance, it can utilize more energy when there is low demand for renewable energy, and conversely, sell back stored energy during peak demand times. This approach reduces potential energy waste from renewable resources when production exceeds demand, enhancing the overall sustainability of the grid.

To facilitate this, Volvo Cars plans to provide necessary hardware for using bidirectional charging, including a premium wall box and home energy management system in the EX90. It will also support accessories such as adapter plugs for home appliances and cables for charging with other vehicles.
