Scania Korea has launched the fuel-efficient vehicle ‘R540 6X2/4 Tractor.’

With the rising fuel costs increasing the economic strain on customers, Scania has focused its product design on enhancing fuel efficiency. The R540 6X2/4 Tractor is a result of this initiative and is the first model Scania has unveiled in Korea.

The newly introduced R540 6X2/4 Tractor has undergone extensive optimization to achieve better fuel efficiency without compromising performance. Unlike the commonly sold 6X2 models, where the variable axle is positioned at the back between two axles, this model installs the variable axle between the first and third axes, reducing the distance between them by about 600mm compared to traditional 6X2 tractors, minimizing the space between the cab and trailer.

By optimizing the specifications and positioning of the cab bumper, and incorporating an under air deflector at the bottom of the bumper, air resistance has been significantly reduced, leading to improved fuel efficiency. Moreover, utilizing single tires on the two axles is a notable feature, making the vehicle approximately 350kg lighter, enhancing fuel economy while also cutting down tire costs, providing economical vehicle maintenance.

Additionally, various internal and external specifications have been applied similarly to the higher trim level S cab to enhance driver convenience. To prevent accidents, a variety of advanced driver assistance systems have also been equipped to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians.

Before launching the R540 6X2/4 Tractor, Scania Korea conducted a series of comparative tests in local environments to demonstrate improved fuel efficiency. These tests were conducted for about two weeks under the same conditions as comparable 6X2 tractors of the same power. The test items included weight distribution, turning radius, acceleration, and fuel economy, with the fuel economy test involving daily travel over distances reaching 400km. The results confirmed a maximum fuel economy improvement of 10% compared to the 6X2 model used for testing.

The R540 6X2/4 Tractor is offered as a package with Scania’s service solution ‘Ecolution’ for maximizing fuel efficiency and the ‘Air Deflector’ to reduce air resistance. This allows customers to experience even greater fuel efficiency.

Pär Liljequist, CEO of Scania Korea, stated, “The newly launched tractor is optimized for long-distance transport customers where fuel efficiency is paramount, especially in container transport businesses. Above all, we expect this highly fuel-efficient product to provide better profitability for customers who are struggling due to the recent rise in fuel prices.”
