Volkswagen has accelerated its transition to e-mobility, delivering approximately 330,000 battery-powered electric vehicles worldwide in 2022, resulting in a 23.6% growth in total electric vehicle deliveries compared to the previous year.

The overall delivery volume of Volkswagen’s drive train models reached 4.56 million units. The order backlog in Europe alone increased by 18% year-over-year, with approximately 640,000 customers contracting for Volkswagen models across all drive train types.

Imelda Labbé, member of the Volkswagen brand sales/marketing/after-sales board, stated, “Despite ongoing supply bottlenecks, Volkswagen achieved strong sales performance in 2022. The remarkable performance in electric vehicle sales over the past year demonstrates that Volkswagen is moving correctly toward being the most ideal brand for sustainable mobility based on an appealing product portfolio.”

Under its electric vehicle roadmap, the ‘Accelerate Strategy,’ Volkswagen is ramping up its electrification campaign to launch 10 new electric vehicles by 2026. Volkswagen, already equipped with a broad electric vehicle portfolio, aims to cover all segments from entry-level electric vehicle models priced under €25,000 to the new flagship model ID.7 by 2026.

The ID. family of pure electric vehicles from Volkswagen is receiving positive responses in the global automotive market. Notably, the ID.4 positioned itself as Volkswagen Group’s flagship pure electric vehicle, delivering approximately 170,000 units worldwide in 2022.

In the Chinese market, 143,100 units of the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.6 models were delivered, while in North America, 22,700 units were sold, marking a growth rate of 27.7%. In Sweden, for three consecutive years, ID. family models have topped the best-selling electric vehicle rankings (ID.3 in 2020, ID.4 in 2021-2022).

Since the first delivery of the ID.3 in September 2020, over 580,000 units of ID. family models have been delivered worldwide, signifying that Volkswagen has already reached the first milestone of its e-mobility campaign. The technical basis for the ID. family models is Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB).

Meanwhile, at CES 2023, Volkswagen unveiled the camouflaged model of the ID.7 to be newly added to the ID. family lineup. Volkswagen is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio into the premium compact segment with the mass production model ID.7.

In 2022, despite challenging market conditions, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.56 million vehicles to customers across all drive train types.

In response to the rapidly growing SUV market trend, Volkswagen quickly and systematically revamped its product portfolio. The proportion of SUVs among total vehicle deliveries increased by 4% year-over-year, accounting for 45%, with over 80% of the US market comprising SUV models. In Europe, the compact SUV T-Roc was the best-selling model in the European SUV market.

Due to ongoing semiconductor supply issues, Volkswagen anticipates that 2023 will be a volatile and challenging year; however, it expects gradual improvements in supply conditions as production stabilizes. Imelda Labbé, a member of the sales board stated, “Volkswagen is doing its utmost to shorten customer delivery times and reduce order backlogs as quickly as possible.”
