SK Telecom will celebrate its 40th anniversary on the 29th.

Since introducing the vehicle phone service in 1984, SK Telecom (then known as Korea Mobile Telecommunications) has led the global mobile communication industry from the commercialization of CDMA in 1996 to the introduction of LTE-A in 2013 and 5G in 2019.

Through mobile communication services, the lives of the nation have become more convenient and affluent, and the ICT ecosystem, including smartphones, devices, and platforms, has made significant advances. SK Telecom stands at the center of South Korea’s development in mobile communication and ICT history.

Building on its wired and wireless communication foundation, SK Telecom has propelled related industries such as media, commerce, and cloud, as well as new ICT growth areas like the metaverse, healthcare, and mobility. Additionally, by acquiring Hynix, it has grown into a world-renowned semiconductor company, contributing to South Korea becoming a global semiconductor powerhouse.

Leading the economic and industrial development of South Korea, SK Telecom is now embarking on a new leap as a ‘Global AI Company.’

Through its AI pyramid strategy, which focuses on enhancing its AI technology and creating AI services, SK Telecom is fostering close relationships with customers through ‘self-strengthening’ and ‘collaboration’ centered on AI alliances, driving innovation in all areas of industry and life.

In particular, this year, which marks the first year of the next 40 years, SK Telecom plans to globally expand its AI pyramid strategy via the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA), contributing once again to the industrial renaissance of South Korea based on AI.

  • GTAA (Global Telco AI Alliance): This ‘Global Telco AI Alliance’ formed by SK Telecom and global telecommunications companies such as Deutsche Telekom, the AIN Group, Singtel, and SoftBank is pursuing joint development of telco-centric AI technology and business collaboration.

SK Telecom aims to secure an AI-driven engine centered on Telco LLM in collaboration with companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, evolving its wired and wireless networks into AI infrastructure, and expanding AI solutions in the global market. Furthermore, it seeks to accelerate the AI transformation of its existing businesses to lead AI across industries on a global stage.

Ultimately, the goal is to create AI services utilized by global telco customers, securing a leading position in the AI era.

SK Telecom has unveiled its catchphrase and emblem commemorating its 40th anniversary. This catchphrase and emblem embody SK Telecom’s will and vision to leap forward as a global AI company, elevating South Korea’s AI capabilities based on 40 years of achievements and legacy.

SK Telecom CEO Yoo Young-sang stated, “The achievements of the past 40 years were made possible due to SK Telecom’s unique DNA that has strived to overcome challenging circumstances and create a history of success,” adding, “Building on this DNA of challenge and success, we will leap forward as a global AI company and create another success story leading the industry with AI.”
