LG Electronics’ high-brightness signage has become the first in the world to receive certification from a global testing agency for its properties that minimize screen discoloration.

Recently, LG Electronics received verification from the global testing and certification organization UL Solutions, confirming that LG signage is resistant to yellowing phenomena. UL evaluates electrical and electronic products based on strict reliability judgment standards. This is the first time a global manufacturer has obtained verification for display discoloration resistance.

This UL certification signifies the importance of LG Electronics’ advancements not only in technology development aimed at minimizing yellowing phenomena but also in presenting the testing methods and discoloration judgment criteria, thereby gaining recognition from a global institution for a new standard of display validation.

Yellowing is the phenomenon where the display screen turns yellow. High-brightness signage used for outdoor menu boards, freestanding signs, bus billboards, stadiums, and schools is more prone to this occurrence when exposed to the sun for extended periods.

LG Electronics has noted the discomfort faced by B2B customers, who often encounter frequent product replacements and service interruptions due to the persistent yellowing issue associated with high-brightness signage required for high visibility in various outdoor environments.

To address this, LG Electronics has developed the ‘Anti-Discoloration’ technology through research and development, improving signage heat dissipation techniques, and applying materials resistant to sunlight.

Previously, there were no clear testing standards to assess the resistance of displays to discoloration, making it difficult to quantitatively measure the performance of signage. Collaborating with the Korea Institute of Chemical Technology, LG Electronics established testing methods and defect judgment criteria to provide objective and scientific evidence, securing credibility through UL verification.

LG Electronics plans to apply the Anti-Discoloration technology to its new outdoor high-brightness signage products and gradually expand the range of products that utilize it.

According to market research firm ‘MarketsandMarkets,’ the global digital signage market is expected to grow from approximately $20.1 billion (about 28 trillion won) this year to around $27.3 billion (about 38 trillion won) by 2029, with an annual growth rate of over 6%.

Baek Gi-mun, head of LG Electronics’ ID business division, stated, “This verification has reaffirmed the highest levels of signage quality and product technology. Through various research and development activities aimed at resolving customer discomfort, we will continue to increase customer satisfaction and trust.”
