‘BorgWarner High-Voltage Electric Fan’

BorgWarner has signed a supply contract for its high-voltage electric fan (eFan) system, set to be deployed in a leading global OEM’s series of large electric commercial vehicles (BEVs) in North America. This contract represents the largest eFan project BorgWarner has secured in North America, with production set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The eFan system from BorgWarner comprises three main components: the fan, electric motor, and integrated high-voltage inverter, delivering up to 10 kilowatts (kW) of power and 40 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. The system supports both low and high-power options and is designed to operate across a wide temperature range, from -40 degrees to 80 degrees Celsius. The modular design of the system allows for customization of eFan components according to customer requirements and standards.

Additionally, BorgWarner’s eFan system offers best-in-class noise and vibration (NVH) control technology, with the fan’s structural design optimized for maximum performance at speeds below 3,000 RPM. This capability contributes to a reduction in overall noise during scenarios such as battery charging.

Volker Bang, BorgWarner’s Vice President and President of the Turbo and Thermal Systems Division, stated, “As the industry continues to focus on reducing emissions, the need for high-performance power electronic components is emphasized. BorgWarner’s sophisticated and efficient eFan system provides expandability tailored to customer requirements through a wide voltage range and a liquid-cooled design for long-term reliability. I commend our team for developing this business case, which strengthens our relationship with global OEMs and offers solutions for a more sustainable future.”

BorgWarner’s eFan system supports an operating voltage range of 550 volts (V) to 850 volts (V), ensuring compatibility with various high-voltage commercial vehicle electric systems. A key feature of this technology is the compact and robust operation of the liquid-cooled electric motor and power electronics within the eFan, which enhances reliability during long-term operation.

BorgWarner’s eFan portfolio offers solutions that meet the needs of various large commercial vehicle applications, including electric commercial vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). For high-power applications, the eFan system delivers a performance of up to 40 kilowatts (kW) and 160 Newton-meters (Nm). Furthermore, interfaces and connectors can be customized for customers, and specific system components such as external and integrated inverters, open and ring-type fans can be selected for use.
