LG Electronics has become the first in the world to obtain the Common Criteria (CC) certification, which assesses the security reliability of its V2X (Vehicle to Everything) module supplied for Volkswagen’s internal combustion engine vehicles.
The CC certification is an international standard for evaluating product security and is mutually recognized by 31 countries, including South Korea. LG Electronics obtained this certification in accordance with the advanced security certification system in Europe, ensuring that drivers can drive with confidence.
The newly CC-certified V2X module from LG Electronics will be integrated into Volkswagen’s dedicated internal combustion engine platform (MQB) communication module (VW Transceiver Module). LG plans to have the V2X module designed for Volkswagen’s electric vehicle platform (MEB) certified by the end of the year.
V2X refers to the technology that allows vehicles to communicate with various objects and information on the road. It includes V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle), which informs about surrounding traffic conditions and vehicle proximity; V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure), which communicates with traffic infrastructure such as traffic lights; and V2P (Vehicle to Pedestrian), which identifies pedestrian information.
Through this certification, LG Electronics has been recognized for the excellence of key V2X security features such as ▲ “Message Protection,” which ensures safe transmission and reception of external messages from the vehicle; ▲ “Privacy Protection,” which prevents the tracking of specific vehicles from outside; and ▲ “Access Control,” which allows only authorized users to access vehicle control capabilities.
As the importance of vehicle cybersecurity technology grows, LG Electronics has solidified its position in the global automotive market as a reliable major supplier of essential vehicle components through this CC certification. The company is also expected to gain an advantage in future V2X module order competitions.
In addition to the security certification of its V2X module, LG Electronics is enhancing security across all areas of its component business. The VS division of LG Electronics received Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) certification in February of last year from the internationally recognized testing and certification organization TUV Rheinland. The vehicle cybersecurity management system has become essential for automotive manufacturers as software-defined vehicles (SDV) take center stage in the future mobility industry.
Moreover, LG Electronics is steadily securing its competitiveness in the increasingly important field of security in the automotive industry by acquiring control of the Israeli automotive cybersecurity company Cybellum in 2021.
“We have been recognized for our top-tier security technology in the V2X field through international certification, a key technology for future mobility,” said Eun Seok-hyun, head of LG Electronics’ VS division. “We will continue to lead the global automotive parts industry and provide differentiated value to our OEM customers,” he emphasized.
