BorgWarner has introduced its innovative Electric Torque Vectoring Distribution (eTVD) system designed for the pure electric vehicles (BEV) of Swedish electric vehicle brand Polestar and major European OEMs.
The eTVD is part of BorgWarner’s Electric Torque Management System (eTMS) solution portfolio, intelligently controlling wheel torque to enhance stability, deliver superior dynamic performance, and improve traction during start and acceleration. The eTVD is currently in production for the Polestar 3 SUV, with production for key European OEMs expected to begin later this year.
Volker Wong, Vice President and President of Drive Train and Battery Systems at BorgWarner, stated, “The new EV torque management system demonstrates the diverse expertise, system integration capabilities, and outstanding achievements of the BorgWarner team. As the market transitions to more software-based modules and vehicles, it has become crucial to have sophisticated systems like BorgWarner’s eTVD that can accurately and swiftly compute, predict, and control vehicle behavior in various situations. We have received very positive feedback from customers regarding test drives, and we hope to better meet market demands through our expertise in software, control, and measurement.”
The high-performance eTVD provides a 3-in-1 system that replaces a differential, featuring torque vectoring and on-demand distribution capabilities. Unlike brake-based systems, torque vectoring prevents unnecessary brake intervention, reducing noise and vibration. Additionally, it offers benefits such as reduced wear on brakes and tires, as well as decreased particulate emissions.
BorgWarner’s eTVD system offers a high level of software and control features that can be customized according to the OEM’s platform requirements and brand characteristics.
The high weight of battery electric vehicles can reduce agility, but BorgWarner’s eTVD system enhances overall vehicle safety while providing a lighter feel. Smart design and intuitive software minimize the risk of undesirable driving characteristics, enabling exceptional traction regardless of road and weather conditions. It ensures smooth and safe driving with immediate torque response even in challenging situations.
