‘LG OLED TV’

LG Electronics’ efforts in environmental protection have consecutively received recognition from prestigious foreign certification organizations.

The LG OLED TV has recently obtained environmental product certifications from the non-profit certification body Carbon Trust in the UK for the fourth consecutive year, and from the Swiss SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance), and from the British non-profit certification organization Intertek for the second consecutive year.*

Carbon Trust evaluates the environmental impact of products throughout their entire lifecycle, including production, distribution, use, and disposal. SGS focuses on assessing resource efficiency and the use of harmful substances, while Intertek measures the proportion of recycled materials used to grant certifications.

The reason why the LG OLED TV consistently receives high ratings in various and strict environmental certification evaluations is that it requires fewer components compared to LCD TVs, which need backlighting, and it utilizes lightweight composite materials extensively. The 65-inch OLED Evo uses 60% less plastic and is 20% lighter than an LCD TV of the same size.

LG Electronics anticipates that the amount of plastic used in the manufacturing of OLED TVs this year will be about 16,000 tons less than what would be used to produce an equal quantity of LCD TVs. This reduction in plastic usage is expected to lead to a decrease in carbon emissions during production and transportation processes by approximately 80,000 tons, surpassing the amount of CO2 absorbed by a 30-year-old pine forest covering the area of 10,000 soccer fields over a year.

Approximately 20% of the plastic used in the overall television manufacturing, including OLED TVs, comes from recycled plastics. This approach results in an annual recycling benefit of about 4,000 tons of plastic waste.

LG Electronics’ ESG management efforts, including its environmental protection activities, have been widely recognized by credible domestic and international organizations.

Most notably, LG Electronics has been included in the DJSI World Index, which selects the top 10% of companies based on ESG management, for 12 consecutive years, distinguished from its local peers in the consumer electronics and leisure products sector.

According to the results of the ‘2023 ESG Assessment and Rating Public Disclosure’ released by the Korea ESG Standards Institute (KCGS), LG received a comprehensive A rating for three consecutive years, and also achieved an A grade for four consecutive years in an ESG assessment conducted by the global ESG evaluation body MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International).

Back Sun-pil, who is in charge of HE Product Planning at LG Electronics, stated, “LG OLED TV is the leading premium TV in terms of viewing experience and ESG efforts. We will continue our environmental protection efforts for a better life for everyone,” he said.
