‘My Hyundai Safe Driving Score’

More companies are providing economic benefits, such as discounts on insurance premiums and mileage rewards, for safe driving.

Hyundai Motor Group has collaborated with the city of Seoul to offer eco mileage rewards to drivers of their vehicles. Vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis display real-time driving information, such as sudden acceleration and deceleration, through a smartphone connected service. Drivers are rated on their safe driving with a score displayed in their connected app, which reflects the state of the vehicle.

Customers who have driven over 500 km in 90 days with a score of 85 or higher are rewarded with 3,000 miles, while those scoring over 95 receive 5,000 miles, which can be combined with Seoul’s eco mileage program.

Prior to Hyundai, Tmap Mobility introduced safe driving scores. In April 2016, Tmap Mobility began integrating its service with insurance companies to promote safe driving. The Tmap navigation detects speeding, sudden acceleration, and sudden deceleration while driving to display safe driving scores within the app. With this score, users can sign up for car insurance in partnership with Tmap at discounts of up to 19.3%.

Consumers reacted positively to the news that they could receive discounts on their car insurance via Tmap. Tmap Mobility is currently partnered with 10 insurance companies for vehicle insurance and five for driver insurance services.

Following Tmap, Kakao Mobility began implementing safe driving scores for Kakao navigation users to receive insurance discounts starting in August 2022, and Naver is also developing discounted insurance products for navigation users. This system of safe driving scores has spread from mobility makers to automotive brands, and it raises questions about how far it will extend.
