LG Uplus has launched a campaign called ‘U+ Muno Shield’ aimed at protecting customers from voice phishing, smishing, and other financial scams.

The U+ Muno Shield was established in response to the increasing incidents of financial scams to prevent customer losses. Through the ‘U+ Muno Shield’ section on the Uplus website, users will be provided with prevention methods for various stages of telecommunication services, including plan activation, additional services, and both incoming and outgoing calls.

The U+ Muno Shield initiative features a team of cybersecurity experts from LG Uplus who will clearly explain essential information that customers need to know about preventing financial harm caused by telecom-facilitated fraud, highlighted by their character ‘MUNO.’

As part of the campaign, LG Uplus will first introduce guidelines for actions to take if a malicious app is installed through smishing texts. After a device is infected with a malicious app, there is a high risk of identity theft and data leakage, often leading to financial losses.

To combat this, LG Uplus recommends contacting the Police Cyber Fraud Integration Response Center by calling 112 to request an ‘account freeze’ to prevent further loss. Customers are also advised to visit their bank’s website from a PC to reissue a new digital certificate to avoid misuse of stored certificates on their mobile devices.

Next, customers should visit the ‘M-Safer’ website (www.msafer.or.kr) to check the status of their memberships and register for services that prevent telecom and financial identity theft. Additionally, registering with the ‘Personal Information Leakage Prevention System’ (pd.fss.or.kr) is essential to block new account openings and credit card issuances.

Alongside these efforts, all nationwide stores will strengthen information dissemination by providing pamphlets and videos to educate customers on scam cases and countermeasures during service sign-ups. By the end of the year, LG Uplus plans to publish a white paper summarizing the activities of the U+ Muno Shield campaign.

Hong Kwan-hee, head of the LG Uplus Cybersecurity Center and CISO (Chief Information Security Officer), stated, “To respond to the increasingly sophisticated threats of financial scams, we have consolidated our organization-wide response capabilities to launch the ‘U+ Muno Shield’ campaign. We will actively communicate to identify and improve vulnerabilities throughout the entire cycle of customer telecommunication service usage to ensure that all customers can use our services with confidence.”
