The Volkswagen Group delivered a total of 9.24 million vehicles in 2023, representing a 12% increase compared to the previous year.

All regions contributed to the growth, with Europe (+19.7%) and North America (+17.9%) being the main driving forces. The Group’s largest single market, China, saw a 1.6% increase despite challenging market conditions. The Volkswagen Group improved its market share in Europe, North America, and South America, while also experiencing a slight rise globally. Most brands within the Group grew, with some brands achieving significant increases.

SEAT/Cupra achieved the highest growth rate in the passenger car segment at 34.6%, while MAN recorded a 37.1% increase in the truck segment. In addition, the Volkswagen Group successfully transitioned, selling 771,100 electric vehicles, a 34.7% increase compared to the previous year. The share of electric vehicles in total deliveries rose from 6.9% in 2022 to 8.3% in 2023.

Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, said, “I am pleased with the strong market success of the Group’s powerful brands and models. It is positive that all major brands and regions are growing. The Group is resolutely pushing forward with transformation. We delivered more electric vehicles to customers, increasing by 35% in 2023. Despite continuing challenges, we have showcased numerous attractive new products, solidifying our position.”

Hildegard Wortmann, a member of the Volkswagen Group’s Sales Board, stated, “Considering the geopolitical and macroeconomic circumstances of the past year, the Group achieved solid results. We grew faster than the overall market and slightly increased our global market share. I would like to extend my gratitude to customers, partners, and all teams worldwide for this achievement.”

The sales figures by region for 2023 are as follows:

In Europe, deliveries surged 19.7%, reaching 3.774 million vehicles, of which electric vehicles accounted for 472,400, a 34.2% increase compared to the previous year. Consequently, the share of electric vehicles rose from 11.2% in 2022 to 12.5% in 2023. Volkswagen Group once again increased its market share as a leader in the electric vehicle segment. In Western Europe, there was even more pronounced growth at 20.6%, with 3.271 million customers receiving Group brand vehicles. In its home market Germany, sales increased by 15.1%, totaling 1.185 million vehicles. In Central and Eastern Europe, 503,500 vehicles were sold, reflecting a growth rate of 13.9%.

In North America, the Group delivered 993,100 vehicles, which represents a 17.9% increase. The U.S. comprised the largest share with 713,100 units, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. Electric vehicles also saw a significant rise, with sales increasing by 60.8% to 71,000 units, becoming an important growth driver. Consequently, the market share for electric vehicles rose from 7% to 10% compared to the previous year.

In South America, a total of 518,200 vehicles were sold, a 9.4% increase from the previous year. Brazil significantly contributed to this success with 398,300 units delivered, representing an 18% increase.

The overall deliveries in the Asia-Pacific region grew by 2.3%, totaling 3.594 million vehicles. Despite the challenging market conditions, China, the Group’s largest single market, grew by 1.6%, selling 3.236 million vehicles. The number of electric vehicle models increased by 23.2% to 191,800 units, driving growth. Consequently, the share of electric vehicles in total sales rose from 4.9% in 2022 to 5.9% in 2023. A total of 75,700 Volkswagen ID.3 vehicles were delivered to customers, making the Volkswagen ID.3 one of the best-selling pure electric vehicle models in the world’s largest automotive market. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen ID.4 sold 61,700 units, ranking among the top five compact electric SUV models.
