Samsung SDI and Hyundai Motor have signed a supply contract for electric vehicle batteries.

Samsung SDI will supply batteries for Hyundai’s next-generation European electric vehicles from 2026 to 2032, over a seven-year period.

This marks the first supply contract between Samsung SDI and Hyundai Motor in the electric vehicle battery sector.

Through this contract, Samsung SDI secures Hyundai as a new customer and opens the door to future collaboration opportunities, positioning itself for further growth.

With this partnership, Hyundai Motor can diversify its battery form factors through prismatic batteries, marking a significant turning point in the adoption of this battery type. Both companies plan to continue their collaboration on the early development of the next-generation battery platform.

As part of this agreement, Samsung SDI will supply the P6, a sixth-generation prismatic battery currently in development, to Hyundai.

The P6 enhances energy density by increasing the nickel content of the NCA cathode to 91% and applying proprietary silicon material to the anode. It will be produced at Samsung SDI’s factory in Hungary and supplied to Hyundai’s local plant in Europe.

Choi Yun-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, stated, “We have taken the first step in strategic collaboration with Hyundai Motor, a leader in the global automotive industry. We will do our utmost to strengthen Hyundai’s leadership in the global electric vehicle market through our exceptional technology competitiveness and top-notch quality, by expanding our long-term cooperation.”
