Volvo Cars is rolling out an Over-The-Air (OTA) software update to enhance the infotainment system for Apple CarPlay users.

This update improves the accessibility of navigation app information used through Apple CarPlay, allowing it to be viewed directly on the driver display located behind the steering wheel. This upgrade is specifically targeted at models equipped with the TMAP infotainment service, developed on the Google Android Automotive OS. The feature will support Apple Maps within CarPlay as well as TMAP.

The newly improved Apple CarPlay tiles offer various multimedia information, making it easier to play, pause, and skip music. The cluster also provides call information, enabling drivers to accept or decline calls using buttons on the steering wheel or the central display.

Additionally, to enhance the driver experience, functionalities such as switching driver assistance features using only the steering wheel buttons and selecting whether to fold the side mirrors upon exiting the car are included in this update. Bug fixes and engine optimizations will also be part of this upgrade.

Alvin Bakkenis, head of software engineering at Volvo Cars, said, “We hope to provide a better experience for our customers each time they get into their car. Wireless updates are the cornerstone of this ambition,” adding that, “This Apple CarPlay update is an excellent example of how we work with technology partners to continuously improve and add to the vehicle’s features, thus providing a better customer experience over time.”

Meanwhile, since introducing OTA updates, Volvo Cars has been gradually expanding the number of vehicles that support this feature, solidifying its position as a leader in the segment. In particular, starting with the newly launched XC60 model in the second half of 2021, all models from 2023 onwards will support 15 years of free OTA updates in Korea.
