Polestar unveiled the Polestar 4, its electric performance SUV coupe and the brand’s second SUV, for the first time in the world at Auto Shanghai 2023.

The Polestar 4 is a new dimension of SUV coupes designed to combine the aerodynamic benefits of a coupe with the spacious advantages of an SUV. Currently, it is the fastest model among the production models introduced by Polestar, featuring a design language that was first showcased in Polestar’s concept cars. The Polestar 4 sits between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of size and price.

“With the Polestar 4, we approached the design of electric SUV coupes in a creative and new way,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “Rather than simply altering the roofline of existing SUVs while compromising rear seat headroom and comfort, the Polestar 4 was designed from the ground up with sufficient consideration for the comfort and experience of rear seat passengers.”

As a design-leading brand, Polestar incorporated critical design elements from the Precept concept into the Polestar 4. Notable features include dual blade front lights, a Polestar emblem that shines with precision in millimeter increments, and a new type of immersive rear seat passenger experience enabled by the elimination of the rear window.

By maximizing aerodynamics through a low front, folding door handles, frameless windows, rear aero blades, and a rear light bar, Polestar created a visually stunning design.

The Polestar 4 is a D-segment SUV coupe based on the electric vehicle-exclusive Premium SEA platform (Sustainable Experience Architecture), boasting dimensions of 4,839 mm in length, 2,139 mm in width, and 1,544 mm in height, with a generous wheelbase of 2,999 mm.

The interior features excellent spaciousness and offers a comfortable ride with reclining seats. Ambient lighting, inspired by sunlight, adds a three-dimensional feel to the interior and can be adjusted according to the driving environment.

Additionally, it is equipped with an electrochromic glass roof that can adjust its transparency, and the removal of the rear window allows the glass roof to extend over the head of rear seat passengers, providing generous headroom and openness. Also, a secondary media and climate control screen has been integrated between the front seats for rear seat passengers to control directly.

In the space where the rear window was located, a rear camera has been installed, allowing the driver to have a wider field of view through a high-definition screen compared to the traditional rearview mirror. If needed, drivers can deactivate the digital feed to manually check the situation and communicate with rear seat passengers.

Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s head of design, stated, “The Polestar concept model Precept eliminated the rear window and placed the essential rear headrest further back to introduce a new passenger experience. Polestar applied this design concept into the premium SUV coupe Polestar 4, providing a surprising and unique experience for rear seat passengers.”

The interior materials used in Polestar 4 are themed around ‘soft tech,’ inspired by the fashion and sportswear industry, and feature new colors such as Storm and Electron for the exterior and Mist for the interior.

Through the Polestar 4, Polestar has achieved higher sustainability by replacing existing materials with recyclable and low-carbon materials. Measures to increase supply chain transparency, such as blockchain tracking for hazardous materials in batteries, as well as life cycle assessments to measure the vehicle’s actual carbon footprint, will also be released along with the Polestar 4 sustainability assessment in 2024.

Polestar 4 implements a single-material approach for certain components, where all layers are produced from the same material, which was first introduced in the 2022 Polestar O2 concept.

This method reduces the need for material separation during recycling, enabling more efficient recycling.

Moreover, the new interior material comprises custom-knit fabric made from 100% recycled PET, along with bio-material micro-tech vinyl and animal welfare-certified napa leather. The custom-knit material developed with Swedish textile schools, first showcased in Polestar Precept and applied to Polestar 4, embodies new technology for the automotive industry that minimizes waste by eliminating leftover scraps during customization.

The interior’s inlay carpet uses recycled PET, while the cabin floor features eco-friendly nylon, which includes reclaimed fishing nets. Additionally, specific door trim panels are made from NFPP (natural fiber polypropylene), reducing virgin plastic by up to 50% and cutting weight by as much as 40%. The bio-material vinyl, MicroTech, first introduced in Polestar 3, is also applied to Polestar 4, substituting crude oil with pine oil and reusing recycled fibers for the backing.

The Polestar 4 is the fastest production vehicle developed by Polestar to date, delivering a powerful performance of up to 400 kW (544 hp) and reaching 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Equipped with synchronous permanent magnet motors, the Polestar 4 promises sharp steering and handling responses that provide an agile and dynamic driving experience for all passengers.

It is available with dual motor and single motor trims, aiming to offer a new dimension of electric driving experience that combines high output and performance with control and safety suitable for everyday driving.

The dual motor trim features semi-active suspension, providing additional adjustments between comfortable ride quality and dynamic performance, allowing drivers to select driving modes for optimization. The performance mode enhances powertrain responsiveness, activating both motors for optimal output, while the regular driving mode uses only the rear motor, offering a calm driving sensation while improving efficiency.

Long-range dual motor and long-range single motor trims are both equipped with a 102 kWh battery, with the long-range dual motor targeting a maximum output of 400 kW (544 hp) and 686 Nm, as well as a maximum WLTP range of 560 km. Furthermore, a disconnect clutch allows the front motor to be deactivated as needed to maximize range and efficiency.

All trims support up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging with an electronic charging cover. The Polestar 4 is also equipped with Vehicle to Load (V2L) functionality, enabling the use of the car’s power externally, along with bidirectional charging capabilities. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with a heat pump as standard to utilize surrounding heat for pre-conditioning the interior and battery.

The long-range single motor features rear-wheel drive with a motor that produces 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm, targeting a maximum WLTP range of 600 km. Wheel sizes can be selected from 20 inches to a maximum of 22 inches, fitted with Pirelli and Michelin tires.

Polestar is advancing toward the future of autonomous driving with cutting-edge technology in all its vehicles. The Polestar 4 features a 15.4-inch horizontal screen powered by the Android Automotive OS and the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform infotainment system.

This system integrates Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play, offering the most advanced connected experience, with plans for ongoing collaboration with Google to continuously expand the system’s boundaries. The domestic sales models will include an electric vehicle-specific navigation and infotainment system developed in collaboration with TMAP.

Additionally, an optional Harman Kardon audio system featuring twelve speakers and a 1,400-watt channel-hybrid amplifier is available. When selecting the napa pack option, two additional speakers are included in the front headrests, increasing the total to 16 speakers for a lively sound experience. Apple CarPlay is also available.

Like all Polestar vehicles, the Polestar 4 will provide regular over-the-air software updates, allowing the vehicle’s software to stay up-to-date without the need to visit an after-sales service center.

Due to its strong connection with Volvo Cars, safety is among the top priorities for Polestar. The Polestar 4 applies the same rigorously tested advanced safety technologies found in all Polestar vehicles, featuring up to nine airbags and introducing a new partnership with Mobileye for intelligent safety technologies, including advanced driver assistance systems for supervision.

A total of twelve cameras, one radar, and twelve ultrasonic sensors come standard. An included driver monitoring camera transmits data without recording, observing the driver’s eye and head movements to prevent accidents associated with fatigue or weakness. The driver monitoring system is designed to help drivers actively participate in driving as needed, along with actual detection features in the steering wheel.

The 10.2-inch driver display is positioned in front of the steering column, providing essential information such as speed, battery status, and driving range. Various driving assistance systems can display information such as current road conditions, activated driving assist features, and navigational info through a virtual environment. A 14.7-inch heads-up display also projects vehicle information, phone calls, and key navigation data onto the front windshield to enhance the driver’s awareness. It even includes a snow mode feature that changes text color from white to yellow for optimal visibility in snowy conditions.
