Hyundai Motor Company is utilizing biogas obtained from wastewater treatment plants to produce clean hydrogen, leading the charge in carbon reduction and the activation of the hydrogen ecosystem.

Hyundai held a ceremony for the ‘Establishment of Clean Hydrogen Production Facilities Using Biogas and Promotion of the Hydrogen Ecosystem’ attended by key stakeholders including Seokang Hyeon, Head of Hyundai’s Planning and Finance Division, and Lee Beom-seok, Mayor of Cheongju.

This agreement comes after Hyundai and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology consortium were selected as private operators in a public project by the Ministry of Environment to establish clean hydrogen production facilities using biogas earlier this March.

Under the agreement, Hyundai plans to establish facilities capable of producing 500 kg of clean hydrogen per day using biogas derived from organic waste at the public wastewater treatment plant site in Cheongju by 2024, with an aim to increase this production capacity to 1,000 kg per day by 2027 through further expansions.

Additionally, a hydrogen charging station will be set up nearby to supply clean hydrogen at a reasonable price to local residents, prioritizing them over by-product hydrogen, with plans to eventually extend supply to public service vehicles such as hydrogen buses and hydrogen cleaning trucks in Cheongju.

By collaborating with Cheongju City, which is actively promoting hydrogen business initiatives, and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, which has pioneering experience in commercializing clean hydrogen from biogas, synergy effects are expected.

A Hyundai representative stated, “With this agreement, we intend to fully implement a resource-circulating eco-friendly hydrogen business.” He added, “In the future, we will continuously promote clean hydrogen production facility projects domestically and develop overseas business models to secure global leadership in the hydrogen ecosystem.”
