McLaren Automotive has appointed Tobias Schulman as the new Chief Design Officer (CDO), with his official activities starting this September.

Tobias Schulman, CDO, is a notable figure in the automotive design industry with 20 years of experience, having worked with various luxury car brands, including overseeing design at Bentley, Bugatti, and Aston Martin.

Before joining McLaren, Schulman served as the lead designer for the ‘Solus GT’ as a senior designer for McLaren’s special projects. The Solus GT is a track-only single-seater hypercar that brings to life a virtual concept car from the popular racing game ‘Gran Turismo Sport.’

Moving forward, Schulman will lead a design team at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Surrey, England, focusing on design concepts, interior and exterior designs, as well as color and material selections. Simultaneously, he plans to engage with customers wishing to customize vehicles at the McLaren Production Centre (MPC) before production begins.

Schulman started his automotive design career at Volkswagen in the same year he graduated from Germany’s Hochschule Pforzheim in 2005. After leading exterior design at Bugatti and Aston Martin, he joined McLaren, later moving to Bentley and now returning as the CDO of McLaren. He will report directly to McLaren CEO Michael Leiters.

Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive, stated, “We warmly welcome Tobias Schulman to McLaren. He has a deep understanding of McLaren, having successfully led the innovative Solus GT project from inception to completion, and will play a pivotal role in infusing new design language into our high-performance business strategy portfolio.”
