71,525 units vs 71,713 units. Mercedes is trailing BMW by a mere 188 units. The battle for the 2022 sales crown between the two brands is intensifying. Mercedes is ramping up production with inventory reserves, while BMW is clearing stock through aggressive discounts.

After struggling with supply shortages this year, Mercedes is launching a major inventory push by year-end. They have secured stock for popular models ranging from the CLA and GLA compact models to the S-Class. They aim to maintain an edge over BMW. Mercedes sales staff are putting the difficulties caused by supply shortages behind them, saying, “We will retain our market leadership this year,” and are accelerating their sales efforts.

In response, BMW is also ramping up aggressive sales efforts. They are currently running a 12% discount event for their flagship model, the 5 Series. Considering that the starting price of the 5 Series is in the upper 60 million won range, this translates to a discount of approximately 8 to 9 million won. Thanks to year-end promotions, BMW is reported to have sold out their entire stock of the 5 Series.

The automotive industry is keenly watching whether BMW will reclaim the title of top imported car brand after six years, or if Mercedes will continue its six-year reign at the top of the import car market.
