SsangYong Motor Company is presenting a ‘Wireless Charging Platform for Electric Vehicles’ developed as part of a long-term research initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, thus showcasing next-generation eco-friendly technologies.

This exhibition is part of the ‘2022 Radio Broadcasting Industry Promotion Week’ event organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, taking place from the 21st to the 22nd at the Coex Grand Ballroom in Gangnam, Seoul. Alongside exceptional wireless power products, SsangYong is showcasing this wireless charging platform using their first electric SUV, the Korando Emotion.

The ‘Wireless Charging Platform for Electric Vehicles’ displayed by SsangYong utilizes a 22kW wireless charging system applied to the Korando Emotion equipped with a 61.5kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, requiring about three hours to charge. A representative from SsangYong explained that this technology alleviates customer inconveniences caused by the weight of cables in wired charging systems.

Additionally, they are further developing technologies to shorten charging times, including innovations that allow battery charging while driving through overhead power lines, as well as while the vehicle is stationary.

If this technology is commercialized, it is expected to reduce the battery capacity of existing electric vehicles to one-third. This can significantly lower the battery costs, which comprise a large part of electric vehicle pricing, thereby reducing consumer burdens.

Meanwhile, since 2020, SsangYong has participated in the national project, ‘Development of Wireless Charging Platforms for Electric Vehicles with High Safety and Convenience,’ in collaboration with the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, KAIST, Korea Electric Research Institute, Yonsei University, Dongyang ENP Co., and BI Energy Co. They are conducting research and development, planning to establish a mass production system after practical verification and reliability testing.
