SsangYong Motor has received recognition for its groundbreaking SUV, the Torres, which has won the gold medal, the ‘Prime Minister’s Award,’ at the 2022 Good Design Awards.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion assess the appearance, function, materials, and economic viability of products to enhance national design competitiveness and select outstanding design products that contribute to improving the quality of life for citizens. These products are awarded the government certification symbol, the ‘GD (Good Design)’ mark.

This year’s award ceremony, marking its 38th year since its inception in 1985, was held on the 23rd at the aT Center in Yangjae, Seoul, during the ‘Design Korea 2022’ event, where Kim Baek-soo, head of design planning at SsangYong Motor, attended on behalf of the company to receive the award.

During the award ceremony, a judge remarked, “The SsangYong Torres maintains the characteristics of a timeless SUV while incorporating elements of new lifestyles and trends, showcasing its distinct exterior design and simple interface.”

The Torres has been reborn as a true SUV that has never existed before, according to SsangYong officials, as it embodies the company’s unique heritage, reinterpreting a robust and modern traditional SUV style with a retro sensibility.

Designed based on SsangYong’s new design philosophy, ‘Powered by Toughness,’ the Torres is the first product that intuitively conveys the essence of an SUV that thrives on a strong and free-spirited life full of adventurous challenges. It features strong lines and rich volumetric aesthetics that express the rugged SUV identity the company aims to achieve through meticulous details.

Lee Kang, executive director at the SsangYong Design Center, expressed, “It is an honor that the Torres has won the distinguished Prime Minister’s Award, following the Tivoli’s Good Design Mark in 2015 and the G4 Rexton’s Prime Minister’s Award in 2017. We will continue to present a brand that satisfies consumer emotions based on SsangYong’s unique design and the essence of authentic SUVs.”
