Real-World Performance

“Very Heavy Duty – works for Florida”

My 10×14 storage shed was collecting debris from trees on the roof so I got this 12×16 to prevent deterioration and prolong the life of the shed. Installed this in October’22 (pics and video from August’23) in central Florida so it’s seen a lot of storms and also held up fine for Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. There are plenty of grommets so even though one has started to rip I can just go with a different one. Brown side up would have matched better but silver side up does a great job of reflecting the sun and heat. If and when I need to replace this one, I will add some foam on the sharp edges and I could see getting several years of use out this.

This positive review suggests that the tarp can withstand harsh weather conditions, including hurricanes. However, not all users have had such a positive experience.

“Grommet ripped on first use”

I can’t believe this is an Amazon Choice tarp and it is certainly NOT heavy duty! Grommet ripped on first use, and I did not use much force. I certainly will not use this product again and will not believe Amazon Choice in the future. I’m returning this tarp and heading to Lowes.

Ripped grommet

This review highlights a common complaint among users – the weakness of the grommets. Many reviewers have reported similar issues, suggesting that the tarp’s durability might not be as advertised.

Waterproof Claims: Fact or Fiction?

One of the most crucial features of a good tarp is its ability to repel water. Unfortunately, several users have reported that this tarp fails in this aspect.

“NOT WATERPROOF!”

Only owned this tarp for about three weeks and it is definitely not waterproof. Do not buy if you need something that is waterproof.

When You Might Need a Heavy-Duty Tarp

Despite the mixed reviews, a heavy-duty tarp can be crucial in various scenarios:

  1. Outdoor Equipment Protection: Covering lawn mowers, grills, or patio furniture during harsh weather.
  2. Construction Sites: Protecting building materials or unfinished structures from rain and sun.
  3. Camping: Creating a waterproof ground cover or emergency shelter.
  4. Moving: Securing items in an open truck bed during transportation.
  5. Gardening: Covering sensitive plants during frost or creating shade for heat-sensitive vegetation.

Conclusion

While the 10×12 Heavy Duty Tarp promises durability and waterproof protection, user experiences vary widely. Some have found it effective even in extreme weather conditions, while others report issues with waterproofing and grommet durability. If you decide to purchase this tarp, it might be wise to test it thoroughly before relying on it for critical applications. Always have a backup plan, especially if you’re using it for important outdoor protection.
