When driving, you are not alone. The AI assistant, Ari, keeps you company without stopping. Moreover, it turns into a mobile concert hall with your favorite artists singing right beside you. This is the upgraded 2024 Volvo S60 featuring the second-generation T-map Auto.
I drove 88 kilometers from Gangneung, Gangwon-do to Goseong in the Volvo S60. The iconic Thor Hammer headlights and the angular design from the A-pillar to the C-pillar have not changed. However, the most significant change comes from the upgrade to the 2024 model, incorporating the second-generation T-map Auto.
The second generation has significantly improved over the previous system. As soon as you start driving, a daily briefing begins. You can listen to your schedule for the day through T-map. You can also perform internet searches using the app called Vivaldi. At least in situations where I am not driving, my smartphone can take a little break.
The infotainment features have been enhanced. You can listen to real-time news through a news app via voice and enjoy reading using audiobooks. The excuse of not having time to read is now just that—an excuse.
The hidden card of T-map infotainment is the Hey Volvo app. Now, while in the car, you can access the Hey Volvo app and book a regular maintenance appointment at your desired service center. This is currently available only in Volvo, among automotive brands sold domestically.
The core functionality of T-map has also been enhanced. Traffic light information from Seoul city has been integrated, providing accurate navigation for the frustrating streets of Seoul. Personalization has been added. On the way back to Goseong, our base camp, after leaving Gangneung, the command “let’s go back to the starting point” triggered immediate navigation. For instance, for office workers commuting between home and work, they can add voice commands such as “Let’s go to the office.” or “Let’s go home.” through personalized settings.
The T-map Auto system receives wireless updates, adding new features continuously.
In dull situations, Ari is like a wise professor. When I say, “Play an exciting song,” Ari plays tracks that the driver will enjoy. Through the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, the mood elevates even further.
In moments of solo driving, the small interior of the car transforms into my own concert hall. While various infotainment features are included, there is no Hi-Pass system installed. Other brands already feature it, while domestic car brands have introduced a Hi-Pass without a physical card, making this absence quite regrettable.
A head-up display is equipped. Through the head-up display, highway toll information is provided. Navigation information is also integrated into the driver’s dashboard. There’s no need to awkwardly glance at the center display monitor while you’re driving on unfamiliar roads.
Listening to a song chosen by Ari while navigating through the city, the tire response is quiet, showcasing remarkable serenity without even feeling minor vibrations.
At a speed of 100 km, the engine revs show 1,500 RPMs in the 8th gear and up to 5,100 RPMs in the 3rd gear. With a maximum output of 250 horsepower at 5,700 RPMs, and peak torque of 35.7 kg.m at 1,800 to 4,800 RPMs, the 2-liter mild hybrid engine combined with the 8-speed automatic transmission offers smooth yet powerful performance.
Even during aggressive high-speed driving, the RPM barely exceeds 2,000. Even in moments of intense high-speed, it remains composed and smiles back. There’s no wind noise, and road vibrations are well managed, providing an excellent driving experience. However, road noise can be annoyingly intrusive.
Advanced driving assistance systems are in place. The adaptive cruise control does not stubbornly cling to its own pace. Instead, it moves slowly, step by step, adapting to the flow of traffic.
A lane-keeping assist feature has been added. In sharp curves, if you unintentionally drift out of your lane, the steering response intervenes, keeping you in the center of the road. It’s like a friend who helps you balance when you’ve had one too many drinks after meeting friends.
In essence, cars have evolved beyond simple means of transportation into mobility platforms where various content can be enjoyed. Volvo, with T-map, is playing a significant role in this transition.
It will be interesting to see what content will be featured in the third and fourth generations of T-map Auto in conjunction with Volvo. The collaboration between Volvo and T-map began memorably, and the future history they will create is highly anticipated.
