SK Telecom Enhances Network Capacity Ahead of Chuseok Holiday

‘SK Telecom has expanded the network capacity at major base stations nationwide in preparation for the upcoming holiday.’

SK Telecom has initiated intensive management of mobile communication quality in order to provide stable services during the Chuseok holiday.

From the 13th, when the return traffic for Chuseok is expected to peak, until the last day of the holiday on the 18th, SKT will operate a special communication situation room, deploying an average of over 1,300 personnel from subsidiaries, affiliates, and partners nationwide to monitor communication services 24/7.

Employees from subsidiaries such as SK Broadband, SK O&S, and Home & Service, as well as affiliates like SK Shieldus and Tmap Mobility, will establish an organic response system, with a total of around 7,700 personnel mobilized during the holiday.

For this Chuseok holiday, SKT has completed the expansion of 5G and LTE base station capacity, focusing on major locations where mobile traffic is expected to rise, including regional train stations, bus terminals, airports, popular tourist spots, accommodations, and bustling areas. They are also ensuring quality communication on frequently congested highway sections and providing diligent service management for popular applications like TMAP and A-dot that are heavily used during travel.

On the day of Chuseok, the 17th, SKT anticipates a data traffic increase of about 15% compared to normal days, predicting that data usage will peak during the holiday period. They have completed prior quality checks and optimized services to accommodate this expected surge.

In preparation for possible increases in family travel during the holiday, SKT has also inspected communication infrastructure along key sections of highways and national roads, as well as at cemeteries, parks, resorts, and campgrounds.

Additionally, to support its customers in checking on family members via mobile phones during the holiday, SKT will offer free video call services for five days from September 14th to 18th.

International roaming services used by travelers abroad are expected to increase by 10% compared to the previous month during the Chuseok holiday, and SKT is planning to ensure smooth services through concentrated management.

From a security standpoint, SKT will conduct real-time monitoring and response for potential DDoS attacks or hacking attempts by intensively analyzing the network. They will also proactively inform customers about the risk of smishing scams impersonating delivery notifications during the holiday period.

Sung Jin-soo, head of Infrastructure Service CT at SKT, stated, “With this Chuseok featuring a golden holiday that stretches from the weekend to the public holiday, we plan to do our utmost in service operation and communication quality management to ensure customers have a comfortable and joyful time.”
