SK Telecom accelerates AI innovation in the telecommunications industry through expanded technological cooperation with global telecommunications companies.

On the 8th, SK Telecom announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singtel for next-generation network technology collaboration. SK Telecom’s strategy is to lead service and technology innovation in mobile communication networks in the global market through multifaceted network technology collaboration with Singapore’s top telecommunications company, Singtel.

As founding members of the ‘Global Telco AI Alliance,’ an alliance of major global telecommunications companies focused on AI, this MOU was signed as a continuation of activities aimed at enhancing their own AI competencies while building a global AI ecosystem by combining telecommunications and AI.

Both companies have set goals to enhance customer experience as well as improve network stability and efficiency based on their expertise and experience in 4G and 5G technologies. To achieve this, they plan to promote technical discussions and personnel exchanges in various commercial network fields, including mobile network engineering, construction, operation, and solutions.

In addition, they will expand the scope of cooperation from technological exchanges to joint development and research with strategies for service differentiation such as implementing edge AI infrastructure and researching core network operation technologies, network slicing as evolution strategies for 5G mobile networks, developing 6G application cases, and constructing efficient networks from an ESG perspective.

In particular, edge AI infrastructure is a technology that alleviates computation burdens concentrated in the cloud through edge computing while enhancing the value of mobile communication networks by performing AI inference combined with AI solutions. SK Telecom aims to not only jointly pursue research on related technologies with Singtel but also to specify plans for providing AI services as a result.

Jong-ryeol Kang, CSPO of SK Telecom ICT Infra, stated, “The cooperation between SK Telecom and Singtel is an important first step in creating the future of the global telecommunications industry together,” adding, “We will achieve results in developing efficient high-performance networks, providing stable services, discovering new services based on networks, and developing next-generation communications technologies such as AI mobile and wireless infrastructure by combining the strengths of both companies.”

Tay Yeow Lian, Managing Director of Networks at Singtel, remarked, “As a leading company in 5G technology, we will explore the commercialization potential of various technologies, including network slicing and the adoption of AI infrastructure, and promote technological cooperation that can prepare industries for innovation and evolution towards 6G together with SK Telecom to enhance customer experience.”
