Hyundai Motor Group Establishes Foresight Centre at Oxford University to Shape Future Innovations

Hyundai Motor Group is establishing a specialized research center in collaboration with the University of Oxford to lead macro-level future studies and to develop a long-term vision for the Group.

On the 8th of this month (local time), Hyundai Motor Group held the opening ceremony for the ‘Oxford-Hyundai Motor Group Foresight Centre’ at the Oxford Convocation House.

Attendees at the event included Vice President Kim Gyeon, head of the HMG Management Research Institute; Vice President Kim Heungsoo, head of the Global Strategy Office (GSO); Sumitra Dutta, Dean of the Oxford University Business School; Associate Dean Jonathan Reynolds; Professor Raphael Ramirez; and Professor Trudi Lang.

The University of Oxford has strengths in transforming industrial perspectives and designing long-term future directions for companies through its own scenario planning techniques.

Through the Foresight Centre, Hyundai Motor Group aims to proactively address key agendas related to geopolitical changes and risks in future societies, securing the competitiveness needed to realize a desirable future through innovative and original research that contributes to human progress (Future Shaping).

Moreover, the Group plans to derive long-term perspectives on social changes through discussions and debates with government agencies, international organizations, academia, and private experts, aiming to implement a future research expert training program and leadership workshops to utilize the insights gained in the formation of Hyundai Motor Group’s future strategies.

Additionally, Hyundai Motor Group intends to leverage its open innovation network in key global markets such as the United States, China, India, and Singapore to expand the ecosystem necessary for achieving its envisioned future.

Professor Raphael Ramirez, a global authority in future scenario planning research, and Professor Trudi Lang, who has previously served as a strategic foresight advisor at the OECD Secretary-General’s office, have been appointed as co-directors of the Foresight Centre.

Kim Gyeon, Vice President of the HMG Management Research Institute, stated, “With the paradigm shift in the automotive industry and changes in the management environment, we are in a state of unprecedented uncertainty. I expect the Foresight Centre to significantly contribute to fostering Future Literacy, allowing us to view and reconstruct the future in multiple dimensions within the organization.”

Vice President Kim Heungsoo of the GSO said, “Hyundai Motor Group will actively present the future direction that the global community should aim for, for a better future for humanity. As a first mover in the global market, we will embark on a bold journey for the next generation by securing unique research capabilities.”

Dean Sumitra Dutta commented, “Hyundai Motor Group’s vision for a better future aligns with the core values that the University of Oxford cherishes. Through Oxford’s world-class value-based research capabilities, we will collaborate with Hyundai Motor Group to design the future.”

Amid a dramatically changing global landscape propelled by technological hyper-innovation, Hyundai Motor Group is not only preparing to predict and respond to the short-term future but also establishing a foundation for realizing a desirable future and maintaining a leading role in the future mobility industry.
