Volvo Trucks has unveiled the new Volvo FH16 model, boasting exceptional fuel efficiency. The new Volvo FH16 is equipped with the completely revamped Volvo D17 engine, delivering not only outstanding performance but also increased durability with 780 horsepower from its 17-liter capacity.
The strongest Volvo FH16 engine in Europe has shown approximately a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor in real-world road tests, while also reducing emissions and increasing torque by 7%. This represents an optimal combination for enhancing efficiency and productivity in demanding and diverse transportation tasks, along with the advantage of operating on 100% renewable biofuels.
In particular, the Volvo D17 engine provides improved fuel efficiency when combined with the aerodynamically designed new Volvo FH16 Aero cab.
Jan Helmgren, Product Management and Quality Director at Volvo Trucks, stated, “The engineers at Volvo Trucks have developed an engine that boasts excellent fuel efficiency with higher torque and horsepower levels than any other truck in Europe. The performance of this new model, with significantly reduced fuel and carbon dioxide emissions, is quite remarkable. This means our customers can perform their tasks more efficiently and productively.”
Volvo Trucks is actively developing and introducing new technologies in addition to the engines for sustainable transportation. The Volvo D17 engine in this new FH16 model is a testament to Volvo Trucks’ commitment to reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
The new 17-liter Euro 6 engine is available in three power options of 600 horsepower, 700 horsepower, and 780 horsepower, with torque levels of 3000 Nm, 3400 Nm, and 3800 Nm. The transmission has been upgraded to handle up to 3800 Nm, and the internal efficiency of the transmission for the 3000 Nm and 3400 Nm versions has also been improved.
The new D17 engine has been certified to run on HVO (an alternative fuel derived from renewable sources like bio-gas) across all power ratings, and the 700-horsepower version has been certified for 100% biodiesel (B100) use.
The completely revamped Volvo FH16 and FH16 Aero models equipped with the D17 engine are expected to start sales in mid-2024, with production commencing in the second half of 2024.
