Strengthening the Fight Against Voice Phishing: LG Uplus and Financial Security Agency Join Forces

LG Uplus and the Korea Financial Security Agency have come together to prevent damages to citizens by sharing information on malicious apps related to voice phishing in real-time and blocking access to them.

On the 18th, LG Uplus signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Prevention and Response to Voice Phishing’ with the Financial Security Agency at the LG Science Park in Magok, Gangseo-gu, Seoul.

Under the MOU, the Financial Security Agency will share information obtained through its ‘Phishing Site and Voice Phishing Malicious App Detection System’, which operates 24/7, in real-time with LG Uplus. Based on the provided information, LG Uplus aims to fundamentally block access to phishing sites and places distributing voice phishing malicious apps to prevent damage to the public.

Both organizations will also share various information on new forms of voice phishing such as smishing and call number interception, as well as strengthen technical cooperation in related fields to proactively respond to new fraudulent activities.

To effectively respond to the increasingly sophisticated and complex nature of voice phishing, the Financial Security Agency operates the ‘Financial Sector Voice Phishing Fraud Information Sharing System’. This allows for real-time sharing of voice phishing-related information among various specialized institutions across finance, public services, telecommunications, and security sectors.

With this MOU, LG Uplus, one of the three major telecommunications companies in the country, is expected to enhance the effectiveness of preventing voice phishing damages.

In order to protect customers from civil fraud, including voice phishing and smishing, LG Uplus is conducting the ‘U+ Muno Shield’ campaign. Through the Uplus.com website, they provide guidance on how to prevent civil fraud damage at each stage of utilizing communication services. Recently, they have also conducted mock training for their employees to prepare against smishing bait messages and are engaging in various activities. As a result of these efforts, LG Uplus received a letter of appreciation from the police agency last month for their cooperation in preventing telecommunications financial fraud.

Hong Kwan-hee, the Head of the Cybersecurity Center and CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) of LG Uplus, stated, “As the damage from voice phishing attacks continues to become more severe, it is time for all organizations to come together to respond.” He further added, “We will continue to closely cooperate with the Financial Security Agency and make enterprise-wide efforts to achieve zero customer damage.”
