SK Telecom’s Family Roaming Service Celebrates First Anniversary with Impressive User Adoption

SK Telecom announced that its new concept roaming data sharing service, ‘Family Roaming’, has reached its one-year anniversary as of the 29th.

‘Family Roaming’ allows one family member who subscribes to SKT’s roaming product, the ‘baro’ plan, to add up to four family members to share roaming data for an additional 3,000 won. The service began on June 29 of last year.

After one year since the launch of ‘Family Roaming’, SKT revealed that 530,000 households, totaling 1.26 million users, have utilized the service, with over 75% of roaming households selecting ‘Family Roaming’.

Moreover, among the primary subscribers of ‘Family Roaming’, the proportion of those choosing a ‘baro’ plan of 6GB or more is nearly twice that of individual roaming users, and the actual data usage of ‘Family Roaming’ users was reported to be twice as high compared to individual users.

The user demographics also indicate a higher proportion of female and teenage customers compared to all roaming plan users. The ratio of female users in ‘Family Roaming’ stands at 56% (1.5 times higher than individual users), and teenage users account for 22% (4.4 times higher than individual users).

SKT analyzed that previously, the low participation rate of families in roaming services during trips was due to cost concerns, but the launch of ‘Family Roaming’ has alleviated these burdens, leading to an increase in all family members utilizing roaming services during travels.

There are also tips for utilizing the ‘Family Roaming’ service at a more affordable rate. If a family member traveling together subscribes to the ‘0 Youth Plan’, which offers a 50% discount on the ‘baro’ plan, they can register as the family representative to secure discounted rates for ‘Family Roaming’.

For instance, if a subscriber of the ‘0 Youth Plan’ enrolls in the ‘baro 6GB’ plan priced at 39,000 won and then subscribes to ‘Family Roaming’, they can do so at the promotional price of 22,500 won—obtaining a 50% discount (19,500 won) plus the usual 3,000 won fee for the entire family to access roaming services.

Meanwhile, SKT is preparing various promotions for roaming customers as the vacation season approaches.

SKT will expand the 13% discount benefit available at Shinsegae Duty-Free Store to a maximum of 20% for users of the ‘baro’ plan for the months of July and August. Additionally, during July, primary subscribers of ‘Family Roaming’ will receive a 5,000 won gift card for the Shinsegae Duty-Free Store, both online and offline.

Furthermore, SKT is conducting a cashback event for customers with no roaming plan usage history in the last 60 months. If they subscribe to the ‘baro’ plan by September 20, they will earn 50% of their roaming fees in Naver Pay points.

Yoon Jae-woong, VP in charge of Subscription CO, stated, “The ‘Family Roaming’ service has received a positive response from many customers in the year since its launch,” adding, “We will continue to work hard so that SKT customers can use roaming services with ease.”
