KT Unveils Breakthrough in Quantum Key Distribution: A Leap Towards Ultra-Secure Communication

KT announced on the 23rd that it has successfully developed Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) equipment capable of generating secret key information at a rate of 150,000 bits per second (150kbps). This equipment generates secret keys at the fastest speed among domestically produced QKD devices.

The quantum key distribution device is designed to generate and distribute secret keys based on quantum mechanical properties. When this secret key is used to encrypt information, it becomes impossible to replicate, fundamentally defending against attempts to eavesdrop on physical lines.

Once the developed quantum communication technology is implemented in communication networks, it will be able to refresh quantum secret keys for more than 35,000 encryption devices in just one minute. This technology is expected to enhance the security of internal communication networks in many companies that handle large amounts of information, as well as key public institutions in the national defense sector.

KT stated that this development has improved the performance of quantum key distribution by five times, positioning KT’s quantum communication technology on a global level, especially considering that it has secured similar performance to global equipment manufacturers.

Lee Jong-sik, head of the KT Network Research Institute, stated, “Since we began research and development in quantum communication, we have developed high-performance equipment with domestic technology, and we are working to expand the related ecosystem and revitalize the market,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen the capabilities of domestic companies to secure South Korea’s sovereignty in quantum communication technology.”
