BorgWarner Expands Electric Motor Business with Xiaopeng for Upcoming SUVs

‘BorgWarner’s high-voltage electric motor to be installed in Xiaopeng’s electric SUV’

BorgWarner has announced that it has secured a contract with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xiaopeng for the high-voltage hairpin (HVH) electric motor business intended for two upcoming SUV models. The recently finalized contract includes BorgWarner’s advanced oil-cooled 800-volt (V) electric motor system, consisting of custom stator and rotor components, with production slated to begin in 2025. BorgWarner’s HVH220 electric motor promises high output and torque density, exceptional efficiency, and durability.

Stefan Demel, President and CEO of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to expand our electric motor business with Xiaopeng and build a long-term partnership. BorgWarner is committed to continuously advancing HVH technology to support maximum efficiency for our customers’ two upcoming SUV models.”

The HVH220 electric motor, featuring BorgWarner’s patented high-voltage hairpin winding technology, operates within an 800V propulsion system range. This motor solution has an outer stator diameter of 200mm, integrating a permanent magnet rotor and unique stator insulation enhancement technology to ensure exceptional durability and reliability. The HVH220 motor can generate a maximum power of 300kW and operational speeds up to 18,000rpm, boasting a peak efficiency of over 97%.

To meet the demands for enhanced performance in high-power motors, BorgWarner has designed an oil cooling solution. This technology enables transmission oil to cool the motor, optimizing heat transfer and overall thermal management efficiency. Additionally, direct oil cooling of the rotor effectively extracts heat from the motor’s core, promoting high torque and power density, further enhancing performance.
