Polestar’s 2023 Sustainability Report: A Leap Towards Climate Neutrality

Polestar has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, which includes a 9% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle sold compared to the previous year.

This figure represents a decrease of 3.4 tons of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) per vehicle sold compared to 2022, demonstrating significant progress towards its climate neutrality goals and proving the possibility of reducing greenhouse gas emissions independently of brand growth in the future. This was achieved through three key areas: ▲ the use of materials with a low climate impact ▲ the use of renewable electricity in vehicle and battery production ▲ and enhancing energy efficiency during the usage phase.

Fredrika Klarén, Polestar’s Chief Sustainability Officer, stated, “Polestar’s vision is clear. We aim to prepare more sustainable and innovative solutions for better electric vehicles while accelerating the transition to electric mobility.” She added, “Our industry must acknowledge there is still room for improvement in publicly sharing concrete plans to keep our climate pledges. This year, Polestar is sharing its journey to develop a more concrete roadmap towards its climate neutrality goal for 2040.”

In 2023, Polestar focused on expanding the traceability of battery-critical minerals. The traceability of lithium and nickel in the batteries used in the Polestar 3 has significantly improved, while cobalt and mica have been traced and monitored since 2020 and 2021 through blockchain technology.

The Sustainability Report transparently shares how Polestar has adopted practical approaches to improve its ability to identify and mitigate sustainability-related risks. In 2023, Polestar also introduced a digital platform to streamline the collection of sustainability-related data for transparency, compliance with standards, and regulatory requirements.
