A blue G-Class electric model stands proudly atop a massive rock sculpture. It gracefully descends at a steep angle that suggests it might tumble forward. During the descent, it even shows off its ability to reverse. This versatile machine was revealed for the first time at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show on the 24th, showcasing the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class electric model.

Fred Duan, the representative of Mercedes-Benz China, noted in his greeting, “The G-Class has been synonymous with off-road SUVs for 45 years since its birth in 1979. Today, that G-Class has been reborn as the all-new G-Class.” Following this, the introduction of the G-Class electric model commenced, with Markus Schaefer, CTO of Mercedes-Benz, taking over the presentation. Schaefer characterized the G-Class electric model as ‘a pursuit of timeless value through the fusion of tradition and innovation.’

Markus expressed excitement about the G-Class electric model: “With the addition of an electric drivetrain and improved off-road capabilities, the digital experience has also been significantly enhanced. It will contribute to the expansion of the electric vehicle market, not just in China, but globally, showcasing the extensive capabilities of the G-Class.”

The specifications of the G-Class electric model demonstrate powerful performance, with a maximum output of 587 horsepower and maximum torque of 118.8 kg·m. It boasts a WLTP driving range of 473 km. Off-road performance has also improved, with a lower center of gravity for tackling challenging terrains. The twelve battery modules are protected by three cooling layers to prevent water and dust infiltration. Regarding the off-road stability of the G-Class electric model, Markus stated, “The battery’s underside is protected by a carbon plate, so there’s no need to worry about scratches or damage even during off-road driving.”

The model has been designed with the driver’s off-road convenience in mind. The G-Class electric model offers a variety of off-road driving functions, starting with the off-road cockpit that provides real-time information on steering angles and more, ensuring the vehicle stays on course.

Another hidden feature of the G-Class electric model includes G-Steering, G-Turn, and G-Crawl. G-Steering locks the rear wheels during off-road driving, reducing the turning radius for narrow paths. Additionally, G-Turn allows the front and rear wheels to steer in opposite directions, enabling the vehicle to rotate in place. In a demonstration, the electric G-Wagen showcased its turning capability in place, performing multiple revolutions akin to a triple Axel by Kim Yuna. Furthermore, G-Crawl is a cruise control feature that enhances traction on off-road terrains.

But that’s not all – the fording capability has also been enhanced. The G-Class electric model can now enter deeper water, going up to 850 mm deep, thanks to its waterproof battery.

Its off-road climbing ability is impressive as well, showing the capability to ascend angles of up to 35 degrees, thanks to independent front suspension and four electric motors on the rear axle with automatic precision control.

The G-Class electric model has effectively erased the concept of an engine. If you thought the absence of a roaring engine would make it dull, you’d be mistaken. The G-Class electric model features a virtual sound called G-ROAR.

Markus mentioned, “G-ROAR even incorporates charging sounds so that customers don’t feel bored while charging.”

Finally, Markus highlighted, “The G-Class electric model will be launched in the second half of 2024, and orders will begin as early as tomorrow in the European market.”

Mercedes-Benz has shattered the misconception that powerful off-road driving is only possible with internal combustion engines through the G-Class electric model. A brighter future lies ahead, with the G-Class electric model offering the answer.
