LG Uplus has introduced a new charging technology called ‘Volt Up.’

On March 6th, at the EV Trend event held at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul, visitors experienced the Volt Up electric vehicle charging system developed by Uplus. The name ‘Volt Up’ comes from the design where the charging connector rises upward.

The Volt Up charging system differs from conventional electric vehicle charging systems. Typically, electric vehicle chargers are installed adjacent to square parking areas. However, the Volt Up system features charging cables installed on the ceiling that lower down into the parking space. A booth representative stated, “The Volt Up system allows the cable to drop from any direction—front, back, left, or right—making it a significant advantage for charging larger electric vehicles without any constraints on direction.”

This innovative setup could alleviate concerns from internal combustion engine vehicle owners about reduced parking space dedicated to electric vehicle charging in buildings or apartments. With the hanging cables, users can charge from their parking spots without needing to seek out designated electric vehicle charging zones.

The Volt Up system has a maximum charging capacity of 13 kW and can accommodate up to three vehicles simultaneously. If three cars charge at the same time, the first car receives 7 kW, while the remaining two cars share 3 kW each.

Another advantage of Volt Up is its hygienic features. Regular charging cables are often heavy and can drag on the ground during use. But with Volt Up, the cables come down from above, resolving hygiene concerns.

Traditional electric vehicle chargers occupy a portion of the parking area due to their installation, causing most vehicles to protrude from their designated spaces while charging. However, with Volt Up, because the cables drop from the ceiling, users do not lose any parking space.

Uplus is actively creating a Volt Up charging infrastructure across public housing and buildings nationwide. A representative from Uplus shared, “Currently, the Hanwha Foreena new apartment complex is having the Volt Up charging system installed, and charging design consultants are also assisting with the installation in existing buildings.”
