Revving Up Innovation: Hyundai Mobis Hosts Mobility Software Hackathon

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 27th that it held a ‘Mobility Software Hackathon’ to strengthen its software capabilities. This competition, aimed at securing talented individuals, saw numerous university students participate with the goal of developing software in the future mobility sector. Notably, this year’s event showcased innovative and creative ideas from future software developers focused on safety and convenience.

The term hackathon is a combination of ‘hacking’ and ‘marathon,’ referring to an event where programming is developed over a specified time and location, much like a marathon. Hyundai Mobis highlighted the enhancement of software capabilities as a key competitive advantage in the future mobility industry, exploring creative recruitment strategies such as this hackathon. The goal is to identify top software talent domestically and increase societal interest in mobility software.

Now in its second year following last year’s success, this Mobility Software Hackathon featured 16 teams comprised of 60 participants from 16 university software clubs and developers who competed in software development skills. After selecting participating teams last month, a two-week pre-embedded (for vehicle functionalities and embedded systems) software training was provided to improve the quality of the outputs, followed by a three-week team development project leading up to the main hackathon event on the 23rd.

Participating teams focused on creating mobility optimization software implementable via embedded software, choosing to work on one of four themes focused on improving safety and convenience in the fields of autonomous driving and connectivity. Notable themes included ‘Mobility Situation Awareness,’ ‘Parking Automation,’ ‘Driver Health-Mobility Connection,’ and ‘Vehicle Functions-Infotainment Link.’

Hyundai Mobis awarded the top prize to Yonsei University’s ‘Subway’ team, which worked on the theme of ‘Improving Ride Comfort through Speed Control Using Reinforcement Learning,’ along with awards for five other teams that demonstrated outstanding project results. All award-winning teams received a special exception for document review when applying for jobs at Hyundai Mobis. Furthermore, they aim to guide excellent talents toward database registration and continuously manage their accumulated members to establish a sustainable talent and recruitment management system.

A representative from Hyundai Mobis stated, “We hope that participants will grow into excellent software talents through this mobility software development project experience, and we expect it will lead to a better understanding and appreciation of Hyundai Mobis’s research and development fields.”
