The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC is a chameleon. It embodies luxury, powerful output, and is equipped with the latest convenience and safety features. The spacious interior is an added bonus.

On the 10th, I drove this beauty from Seoul Square in downtown Seoul to Paju, covering a round trip of 113 km.

First launched in 1997 as the M-Class, the GLE was reborn as the GLE in 2015. Since its debut in Korea in 2016, it has successfully sold over 20,000 units, earning a reputation as an indispensable model in the Mercedes family.

The GLE has transformed into its fourth-generation facelift model last August, releasing five different models including the SUV, SUV Coupe, and high-performance AMG variants. With such a broad lineup, it may leave potential buyers in a dilemma.

The GLE 450 4MATIC features the AMG Line exterior as standard. The massive diamond grille with the iconic Mercedes pattern and multi-beam LED headlamps add a luxurious touch unique to the GLE.

Equipped with an AMG line, the rear lights and dual exhaust of the GLE create an attractive silhouette that proves an SUV can be sexy.

Measuring a massive 4,925 x 2,020 x 1,780 mm, the GLE’s dynamic curves from the A-pillar to the D-pillar emphasize its unique styling. With a wheelbase of 2,995 mm, there’s more than enough room for two fists in front of the knees and two fists above the head when seated in the second row. The central tunnel of the second row offers ample headroom, even for three across.

Equipped with an independent air conditioning system and two C-type USB ports in the center console of the second row, there will be no quarrels over air conditioning or smartphone charging issues on long journeys.

The 12.3-inch driver’s instrument panel and central display are seamlessly integrated, allowing for real-time monitoring of vehicle status while driving. Additionally, the head-up display enhances driver’s focus.

With 64 color options for ambient lighting, the GLE exudes a luxurious ambiance. Featuring the NTG7 telematics program, it allows wireless use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The center fascia area, once cluttered with cables, is now neatly organized, thanks to NTG7.

It makes 2.8 turns from lock to lock. The steering response is very heavy and smooth. Although the GLE plays the role of the E-Class in Mercedes’ SUV lineup, its luxurious steering response is akin to that of the S-Class. It feels as if it boasts, “This is just the beginning” with its steering response.

With a power output of 381 horsepower at 5,800–6,100 rpm and a maximum torque of 51.0 kg.m at 1,800–5,000 rpm, the inline-six 3-liter turbocharged engine pairs with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the 48-volt mild hybrid system provides an extra 20 horsepower and 20.4 kg.m of torque, significantly boosting driving efficiency.

In the bustling city, I began my journey in comfort mode. The silence was remarkable, with no vibrations or noise from the road. Like a well-mannered city dweller, it exhibits a quiet and sophisticated gait.

At a speed of 100 km/h, it operates at 1,400 rpm in 9th gear, up to 3,800 rpm in 4th. The atmosphere is calm, with only intermittent sounds of vibration from the road. The experience offers the calmness of enjoying a leisurely walk in the park with this vehicle.

Switching to sport mode, I pushed it hard. The calm and composed demeanor turned into a furious roar, and it started to flex its muscles. At high speeds, the engine revs ranged between 5,000 to 6,000, quickening its steps, amplifying the wind and road noise. It felt as though a wholesome young man transformed into the Hulk.

Being able to accelerate and decelerate well isn’t the only requirement. A driving assist system that can handle emergencies is vital. The adaptive cruise control doesn’t just stick to its own speed. It smoothly adjusts to the flow and distance to the vehicle in front, even yielding if another vehicle unexpectedly cuts in.

With a lane-keeping assist system, it perfectly navigates even winding roads without disturbing the neighboring lane.

There are always various variables on the road. When an obstacle is detected, the active brake assist helps with braking within the speed range of 100 km/h. Additionally, the 360-degree around view feature provides visibility in tight alleys or underground parking to avoid potential accidents. After parking, the instrument panel displays a reminder to check for forgotten passengers, such as a baby or a pet.

With its safety, convenience, ample space, and impressive performance, the GLE proves to be a highly versatile model, once again establishing itself as a capable player among Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
