Unveiling the New 2023 Mercedes-Benz A-Class: Hatchback and Sedan Models Arrive with Innovative Features

Mercedes-Benz Korea has unveiled the lineup and pricing for the ‘New A-Class Hatchback’ and ‘New A-Class Sedan,’ officially launching sales in the country this month.

The A-Class is known for its emphasis on safety, efficiency, and youthful design, with the fourth-generation hatchback model officially introduced in the country in 2019. The sedan, which was the first to be added to the A-Class lineup, was launched in 2020. Both models return as updated versions known as the ‘New A-Class Hatchback’ and ‘New A-Class Sedan.’

The ‘New A-Class’ features careful design updates, including a new radiator grille and power dome, the latest multifunction steering wheel, new exterior seat colors, and trim lineups. Additionally, it is equipped with the latest infotainment system and telematics, as well as a 48V mild hybrid system, elevating it to a new level in the compact segment.

This month, Mercedes-Benz Korea will showcase the ‘New A 220 Hatchback,’ ‘New A 220 Sedan,’ and the high-performance model, ‘New Mercedes-AMG A 35 S 4MATIC Sedan,’ with plans to introduce the ‘New Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+’ in the future.

On the 20th of this month, online special models including the ‘New A 220 Hatchback Online Special’ and ‘New A 220 Sedan Online Special’ will launch to celebrate the 20th anniversary. These online special models offer an early opportunity to experience the New A-Class, featuring the popular Polar White exterior color paired with a bright and cheerful interior in Macchiato Beige.

The online special models also come equipped with an air purification package for superior indoor air quality, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a 360-degree camera parking package to assist in tight parking spaces, and a panoramic sunroof that enhances the spacious feeling inside the car.

Killian Tellin, Vice President in charge of products, marketing, and digital business at Mercedes-Benz Korea, expressed, “The New A-Class Hatchback and New A-Class Sedan will lead the next generation of compact cars in the segment, characterized by dynamic design, sophisticated technology, and innovative driving performance. We expect that these models will offer satisfaction not just to younger generations but to all customers who enjoy smart driving with their connectivity and intuitive digital features.”

The front of the New A-Class presents a newly applied Mercedes-Benz star pattern radiator grille and two power domes on the hood that catch the eye. The sharp ‘shark nose’ design and chrome-finished front apron and belt line emphasize the dynamic design typical of the compact segment, while a redesigned rear diffuser accentuates the back of the car. Notably, the updated model introduces a lively Spectral Blue exterior color, enhancing its appeal.

The standard LED high-performance headlamps and rear lights not only add a sporty touch but also support safe driving. The LED headlamps, which resemble sunlight in temperature, reduce eye fatigue and help maintain focus during long drives, while their wide illumination range enables drivers to quickly detect traffic situations and surrounding obstacles.

The New A 220 Hatchback features 17-inch 5-twin spoke lightweight alloy wheels, while the New A 220 Sedan model is equipped with 18-inch 5-twin spoke lightweight alloy wheels, enhancing their sporty image. Additionally, a maximum 19-inch wheel border design offers consumers the opportunity to personalize their exterior design to match their tastes.

The interior of the New A-Class showcases notable elements such as the freestanding dual screens and the latest multifunction sports steering wheel. The dual screens, each measuring 10.25 inches, are designed to appear as one wide screen, providing a spacious feel, while the touch screens enhance usability. The modern multifunction sports steering wheel, made of leather, harmonizes beautifully with the newly designed center console and includes touch control buttons for easier vehicle operation.

Additionally, a variety of seat and trim options are available, allowing customers to express their individuality. The comfort seats of the New A-Class are upholstered with black Artico leather, treated with a new embossing technique, while the warm Macchiato Beige and trendy Sage Gray colors are new options for seats. Moreover, new dark carbon fiber-look trim has been applied to the dashboard and door panels, adding luxury and modernity.

For the first time in a Mercedes-Benz compact segment launched in Korea, a Zero Layer interface is applied to enhance intelligent driving assistance for the driver.

The AI-powered Zero Layer feature learns the user’s behavior to place the necessary functions on the display according to the situation, continuously optimizing based on user actions and surroundings.

Furthermore, after activating online services through the Mercedes me app, users can experience the upgraded “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, which allows for certain actions such as answering calls without the activation keyword “Hey Mercedes.” Through this keyword, users can ask questions about basic vehicle functions, such as how to connect their smartphone to the car via Bluetooth.

Additionally, both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, further enhancing connectivity convenience. If selected as an option, the Burmester® surround sound system offers a more immersive audio experience with Dolby Atmos® sound technology.

The New A 220 Hatchback and Sedan are equipped with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine (M260) featuring a 48V electrical system, embracing a mild hybrid system. This hybrid system includes a new belt-driven starter-generator, delivering 190 horsepower and a maximum torque of 30.6 kg.m. The 48V onboard electrical system provides an additional 10 kW of power during engine starts, ensuring smooth and rapid engine ignition while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency through gliding, boosting, and regenerative braking.

In particular, the new belt-driven starter-generator provides minimal vibrations and noise, contributing to a comfortable driving experience while enabling sailing capabilities even when the internal combustion engine is turned off. During braking and acceleration, energy recovery through regenerative braking supplies electrical energy to the 12V onboard network and 48V battery, promoting more efficient driving.

The A-Class also comes equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission for smooth gear shifts, and a comfort suspension ensures high levels of comfort and smooth cornering even on long journeys.

The New A-Class offers various safety features as standard, including: ▲ Active Brake Assist, which warns the driver of proximity to obstacles and automatically applies emergency braking if a collision risk is detected; ▲ Active Lane Keeping Assist, which provides warnings and steering interventions to help the vehicle return to its original lane if it drifts out; and ▲ Blind Spot Assist, which detects obstacles in blind spots and alerts the driver with visual and audible warnings.

Moreover, features such as ▲ Adaptive Highbeam Assist, which automatically adjusts the high beams according to the driving situation; ▲ a heated windshield washer system that ensures clear visibility and safe driving in cold weather; ▲ a convenient USB package; ▲ a multifunction heated steering wheel; ▲ heated front seats; and a wireless charging system are all provided to enhance driving convenience.

The New Mercedes-AMG A 35 S 4MATIC Sedan combines the distinctive design of the A-Class Sedan with powerful AMG driving performance, offering a thrilling driving experience even in daily use.

The exterior accentuates a sportier feel with newly designed headlamps and rear lamps, an AMG-specific radiator grille, as well as AMG front and rear aprons and a spoiler lip, enhancing its sporty characteristics.

The front apron and power bulges applied to the New A 35 model carry forward design elements from the previous A 45 model, and notably, the AMG emblem replaces the previous Mercedes-Benz star emblem on the hood, emphasizing the identity of Mercedes-AMG.

The interior features a new AMG performance steering wheel made of Nappa leather, emphasizing luxury and sportiness, and the AMG steering wheel buttons allow for intuitive control over exclusive AMG features.

Equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-4 gasoline engine combined with a 48V electrical system, the New Mercedes-AMG A 35 S 4MATIC Sedan delivers an output of 306 horsepower and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Furthermore, the new AMG Speedshift DCT 8-speed transmission offers smoother gear changes, while a new front radiator design enhances temperature management.

Below are the lineups, pricing, and specifications for the domestic launch of the New A-Class.
