Although it is classified as a mid-size model, it is built on the SPA platform, similar to the flagship 90 cluster. It is manufactured at the Charleston plant in South Carolina, USA. Development takes place in Sweden, while production happens in the USA. Considering the Chinese capital behind it, it can be described as a multinational automobile.

For the first time in a while, I felt the heat of the engine. On cold days, that warmth is indeed welcome. It contrasts with the coldness of electric cars. The 48V mild hybrid system adds a little more power and efficiency.

The gasoline 2.0-liter B5 engine, combined with an 8-speed transmission, produces 250 horsepower. With a curb weight of 1,740 kg, this results in a power-to-weight ratio of about 6.9 kg per horsepower. The balance of power and weight is adequate for a mid-size sedan. Upon testing, I managed to record a time of 6.75 seconds. According to the manufacturer, the acceleration time to 100 km/h is 6.7 seconds.

It is front-wheel drive. With the heavy engine in the front, the front wheels handle the steering. Although this structure is disadvantageous for driving stability, it isn’t uncomfortable at moderate speeds. At around 100 km/h, it maintains a comfortable and stable posture. It has a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link suspension structure with 235/40R19 tires. A distinctive feature of Volvo’s suspension system is the addition of a second leaf spring in the rear, positioned horizontally in the direction of the rear axle. This allows for more precise control over the car’s movements, contributing to greater stability. It helps compensate for the disadvantages of front-wheel drive.

Generally, it’s quite silent. However, when you push the accelerator deeply, the boring silence is broken, and the powerful engine sound delights the ears.

With just a push of a button, the Pilot Assist is activated. Distance and speed adjustments, as well as lane-keeping, are executed smoothly. It operates so naturally, resembling the actions of a seasoned driver. Many features activate precisely when needed, including forward collision warning and emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, road departure warning, blind spot alert, intersection alert, and rear impact warning. Each time a feature activates, my trust in the car grows.

Direct and frank commentary from Oh Jong-hoon.
There are no selectable driving modes such as sports, normal, or eco. There’s no option for more engaged driving, which might disappoint those who enjoy the driving experience.

The trunk roof reveals the bare metal plate. There are protruding parts that could catch on bags or harm individuals. It would be fitting for Volvo, which promotes Scandinavian premium, to cover it with finishing materials.
