Revolutionizing Car Access: Hyundai and Kia Launch Digital Key 2 for All Smartphones

Hyundai and Kia are introducing a service that allows sharing of ‘Digital Key 2’ between smartphones that use different operating systems.

Through collaboration with Samsung, Google, and Apple, Hyundai and Kia offer greatly enhanced compatibility and user convenience with the Digital Key 2 service.

Previously, this service was provided through apps from smartphone manufacturers. However, the newly launched Digital Key 2 is being redesigned to operate on platforms like Android and iOS, allowing for service provision regardless of the smartphone manufacturer.

Digital Key 2 utilizes ultra-wideband wireless communication for advanced customer convenience, enabling users to unlock their car and start it simply by having their smartphone or smartwatch without needing a physical smart key.

With this new service, the Digital Key 2, which was previously supported only on Samsung and Apple smartphones, can now be used on smartphones running Android OS, and more smartphone models are expected to be supported in the future. (Note: Smartphone models that support Digital Key 2 will be officially announced on the official website later.)

This means users with different operating systems will now be able to freely share digital keys with one another. This greatly improves usability, allowing families to share keys as well as providing convenience and safety for ride-sharing and valet parking without the limitations of smartphone operating systems.

Customers wishing to use the new service can do so by updating their smartphone’s operating system and the Digital Key 2 service app to the latest version, or by deleting the existing digital key and re-registering it with their vehicle.

Hyundai and Kia expect to deliver high satisfaction to many customers who choose Digital Key 2 through this service upgrade. In fact, as of November last year, nearly 90% of customers selecting the Digital Key 2 specification for the newly launched Grandeur model were individuals.

An official from Hyundai and Kia stated, “After being the first in the completed vehicle industry to equip the non-contact Digital Key 2 function in the GV60, we have been expanding its application to various models,” and added, “We will continue to strive to enhance consumer convenience through active collaboration with operating system platform providers.”
