BMW Unveils Groundbreaking Concepts and Models at IAA Mobility 2023

The BMW Group will participate in the ‘IAA Mobility 2023’, which opens in Munich, Germany, on September 5, showcasing advanced innovative technologies regarding electrification, digitalization, and circularity.

At this year’s IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group will introduce the latest electrified models and concept cars from the BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad brands, highlighting the group’s vision and strengths concerning future personal mobility. With a new era of personal transportation beginning, the latest concept car, ‘BMW Vision Neue Klasse’, will be unveiled worldwide for the first time.

Additionally, the all-new 5 Series plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model and the new fully electric MINI Cooper and MINI Countryman, marking the start of brand electrification, will also be introduced for the first time globally, as well as the urban-oriented pure electric scooter, CE 02 from BMW Motorrad.

The BMW Group aims to engage in constructive dialogue regarding the future of personal mobility with local communities and global audiences at IAA Mobility 2023, which is only the second time the event has been held in Munich.

At IAA Mobility 2023, BMW Group will share its achievements towards electrification, digitalization, and circular mobility, while presenting innovative visions for the future.

Firstly, via the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, the BMW Group will introduce its electrified powertrains, digital innovations, and resource-efficient manufacturing methods, announcing the global premiere of the plug-in hybrid model of the all-new 5 Series sedan.

MINI will unveil the pure electric models of the MINI Cooper and MINI Countryman, introducing a new MINI family for the first time. BMW Motorrad will present the innovative BMW CE 02, a compact e-scooter showcasing groundbreaking design for urban mobility.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group will globally present the concept model ‘BMW Vision Neue Klasse’, allowing early experiences of BMW’s next-generation product line. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse encompasses innovative technologies derived from electrification, digitalization, and circular economy, combined in a uniquely BMW way, boasting enhanced levels of design, handling, efficiency, and sustainability.

Based on the BMW i Vision Circular, which presented a vision for a circular economy, and the BMW i Vision Dee showcasing the group’s superior development capabilities in digitalization, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse represents a step forward. During the event, this concept model will be displayed at both the Summit and Open Space venues, offering an experience of many advancements in design, user experience, powertrain, and battery technology.

At IAA Mobility 2023, BMW will present not only the new pure electric model, BMW i5, but also two new models featuring electrified powertrains. These advanced plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technologies are set to be added to the upcoming BMW new 5 Series sedan lineup as early as spring 2024.

The PHEV model of the new 5 Series will be equipped with a new modular Efficient Dynamics unit that integrates a 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder gasoline engine with BMW’s latest eDrive technology. The new powertrain is designed to deliver more powerful outputs while providing instantaneous power delivery, significantly enhanced efficiency, and pure electric driving range.

Additionally, the electric motor specifically developed for the new plug-in hybrid system is integrated with the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, supporting a maximum output of 197 hp. With this highly compact powertrain, the BMW New 550e xDrive sedan achieves a remarkable total system output of 489 hp, while the new 530e sedan can produce up to 299 hp.

The two models will apply BMW’s patented technology to increase the output of the electric motor. The torque generated by the electric motor under normal conditions is 280Nm and can be amplified to a maximum of 450Nm thanks to an innovative pre-gearing stage, making it possible for a small motor to generate high torque typically seen in a large motor, which significantly enhances acceleration capabilities from a standstill or during rapid acceleration. The WLTP standard electric driving range for the BMW New 550e xDrive is up to 90 km, while the New 530e offers a maximum range of up to 101 km.

The PHEV models of the BMW New 5 Series feature a space-saving design for the lithium-ion battery mounted underneath the vehicle, lowering the center of gravity and providing a trunk loading space of 520 liters. Particularly, the trunk space is nearly identical to that of the New 5 Series internal combustion engine vehicle without a high-voltage battery. In addition, the new 19.4kWh high-voltage battery boasts a charging capacity of 7.4kW, doubling the speed of the previous generation models, allowing complete charging from an empty state in just 3 hours.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen displayed at IAA Mobility 2023 showcases the innovative capabilities of BMW’s drive technology. This test model, equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell drive system, is based on the BMW X5 and is currently operational globally for technology demonstration and testing purposes.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen features the latest 5th-generation BMW eDrive technology, and its rear-mounted high-density drive unit utilizes energy from a specially developed lithium-ion battery for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, delivering an output of 401 hp. The electric motor acts as a generator, supplying energy back to the battery during coasting or braking.

The two carbon-fiber reinforced plastic tanks can store about 6 kg of hydrogen at 700 bar, and it takes only 3-4 minutes to fill the tanks completely. Within the hydrogen fuel cell, a chemical reaction occurs between hydrogen and oxygen from the air, generating electric energy. With a full hydrogen tank, it can achieve a driving range of up to 504 km (WLTP standard), accelerating to 100 km/h from a standstill in less than 6 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km/h.

MINI, BMW Group’s premium small car brand, will unveil the new MINI family in the open space set up in downtown Munich. The models featured this time are the new MINI Cooper 3-Door and the new MINI Countryman.

The 5th generation new MINI Cooper 3-Door is a pure electric model that inherits the design legacy of the MINI brand, promising enjoyable urban driving experiences. The pure electric New MINI Countryman features a larger body and expanded interior space, enhancing comfort and safety while offering an excellent driving experience even on unpaved roads thanks to its all-wheel-drive advantage.

Both the new MINI Cooper and the new MINI Countryman are zero-emission while driving and further solidify MINI’s unique position in the same segment through their distinctive design, pure electric drivetrain technology, and immersive digital experiences.

The new MINI family boasts a modern and fundamentally sound design focusing only on essential elements. Moreover, the electrified high-go-kart feeling and the immersive digital experience for users elevate MINI’s DNA to the next level.

MINI’s character is well embodied in the 5th generation MINI Cooper 3-Door model. The new MINI Cooper 3-Door seeks electrification while continuously pursuing the joy of urban driving. The new pure electric model, New MINI Countryman, enables new experiences outside the city. Additionally, the premium small crossover model, MINI Aceman, will be unveiled in April 2024.
