May Sales Report: A Closer Look at South Korea’s Automotive Market Trends

The sales of domestic cars in May stood at 130,389 units, a slight increase of 1.3% compared to the previous month’s 128,588 units. While Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia saw a minor increase in sales compared to last month, KG Mobility, Renault, and GM showed a declining trend.

Hyundai recorded 56,252 units, marking a 3.1% rise from 54,473 units last month. The Grandeur totaled 11,581 units sold, representing a 15.8% increase. Among all Grandeur sales, hybrids accounted for 6,897 units, reflecting a 59.5% share. The Porter saw a decline, selling 8,061 units — down 11.1%. Meanwhile, the Avante increased by 25%, totaling 6,599 units.

Genesis recorded sales of 12,428 units, reflecting a slight increase of 2% compared to 12,187 units in the previous month. The G80 saw sales of 4,813 units, up 5.2% from 4,573 units last month. However, the GV80 dropped to 2,737 units, a decrease of 6.1%, and the GV70 also fell by 5.5% with 2,615 units sold.

Kia recorded 50,364 units sold, a slight increase of 2.1% compared to the previous month’s 49,314 units. The Carnival saw sales of 6,695 units, marking a 3.3% rise from 6,481 units last month. The Sorento, however, reported a decline with 6,499 units, down 4.9% from the previous month’s 6,835. The Sportage also dipped slightly to 6,185 units, a decrease of 1.5% from 6,282 units.

KG Mobility recorded 4,809 units, down 13.9% from the previous month’s 5,583 units. The Torres recorded 2,463 units, a significant decline of 30% from 3,553 units last month. The Rexton Sports saw a slight increase with 1,422 units sold, up 4.7% from 1,358 units in the previous month, while the Rexton jumped to 379 units, reflecting a 46% increase from 259 units.

GM recorded 4,758 units sold, down 9% from 5,230 units last month, narrowly trailing behind KG Mobility by about 50 units. The Trax crossover saw sales of 3,396 units, a 10.5% increase from 3,072 units. The Trailblazer recorded 946 units sold, down 9.2% from the previous month’s 1,042 units. The Colorado recorded 127 units sold, down 31% from 184 units the month prior.

Renault recorded 1,778 units sold, slightly down 1.3% from 1,801 units last month. The QM6 saw 827 units sold, up 6.8% from 994 units. The XM3 recorded 777 units, a significant jump of 27% from 612 units in the previous month, while the SM6 dropped to 174 units, down 10.8% from 195 units.

Conclusion: With diverse performances across manufacturers, May’s sales results showcase potential shifts and market dynamics that could shape the automotive industry’s trajectory in South Korea.
