Lexus Sales Surge: Is the Japanese Automotive Market Making a Comeback?

Lexus sales are once again on the rise. Toyota’s sales are also in a recovery trend. There is a favorable wind blowing for Japanese cars.

The Korea Imported Car Association reported that Lexus sales in April totaled 1,025 units. This marks a 25.5% decrease from the 1,376 units sold the previous month, but a remarkable 114% increase compared to 478 units last year. Furthermore, the cumulative sales for this year have jumped to 4,321 units, a 114% increase from 2,019 units during the same period last year.

After recording an annual sales figure of 12,241 units in 2019, Lexus saw a decline to 8,911 units in 2020 due to the boycott of Japanese products, followed by 9,752 units in 2021 and 7,592 units in 2022, falling below 10,000 units for three consecutive years. However, with a clear recovery trend this year, it is expected that sales will surpass 10,000 units again. Toyota’s cumulative sales this year also reached 2,383 units, up 35.6% from 1,757 units last year.

Lexus emphasized, “The new NX model released last year has received many orders, and customers may have to wait up to a year for delivery.” Moreover, it has been reported that many popular Lexus and Toyota models require a minimum wait time of several months for vehicle delivery.
