Revolutionizing In-Car Experience: Hyundai Mobis Unveils World’s First Rollable Display

Hyundai Mobis has succeeded in developing the world’s first rollable display for vehicles. This technology allows adjustment of the display size based on driving conditions and usage, with expectations for revolutionary improvements in vehicle interior design by minimizing bulk.

The rollable display developed by Hyundai Mobis features a technology where navigation and driving information screens can move up and down and roll up. When the engine is turned off, the screen completely disappears, while during driving, only one-third of the screen can protrude to display minimal driving information. When navigation mode is selected, the screen expands to two-thirds of its size, and during parking or electric vehicle charging, it can be enlarged to a large 16:9 aspect ratio screen for watching video content.

Hyundai Mobis has aimed to introduce this rollable technology, initially seen in smartphones and TVs, to the automotive sector for the first time as part of its global bidding strategy. Luxury brands in North America and Europe are highlighted as key targets. Moreover, reliability suitable for integration into vehicles has already attracted interest from global clients.

The rollable display is characterized by its ability to minimize installation space. Its lightweight structure, designed for minimal bulk, is a key competitive advantage, requiring only 12 centimeters of depth for installation in the current navigation position.

As a result, various changes in vehicle interior design are anticipated. It can be mounted around the driver’s seat as well as installed in the ceiling between the front and rear seats for PBVs (Purpose-Based Vehicles) catering to leisure or family passengers.

Hyundai Mobis’ rollable display boasts a resolution of QHD (2560 x 1440) or higher. The company explained that it is capable of implementing a super-large screen in the 30-inch range.

Currently, in the automotive infotainment market, display technology for entertainment inside vehicles is emerging as a new area of opportunity. The transition from existing LCDs to plastic OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) for screens larger than 20 inches is accelerating.

Considering the scalability of this display technology, Hyundai Mobis has proactively dedicated the past two years to the development of rollable displays. During this time, it has focused on internalizing infotainment capabilities through the development of clusters, SVM (Surround View Monitoring), HUD (Head-Up Displays), and has now achieved the groundbreaking feat of developing the world’s first technology.

Han Young-hoon, head of the Hyundai Mobis EC (Electronics Convenience and Control) Lab, stated, “We expect to play a game-changing role in the automotive display market with a technology that is distinct from existing products, and will lead trends in the infotainment sector to capture the global market.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis continues to gain global attention in the vehicle infotainment sector, achieving successive results in new technology development. Notably, it developed a quick menu selection last year, allowing users to choose desired actions simply through finger movements without touching the screen. The swivel display introduced last year is also the first technology in the world that moves a super-large curved screen up and down.
