Volkswagen Unveils Its First Flagship Electric Sedan: The ID.7

Volkswagen has unveiled its first mid-size all-electric sedan, the ID.7. With a length of nearly 5 meters, this premium sedan features a customer-oriented control system and elegant design while boasting a WLTP-rated range of up to 700km. It combines an excellent powertrain, spacious interior, and premium technology, making it a flagship sedan optimized for long-distance travel and setting a new horizon for the ID. family.

The ID.7 will be launched in Europe and China this year, with a release in the North American market planned for 2024.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, stated, “With the ID.7, which offers a high level of comfort and an overwhelmingly long range, Volkswagen will take the next step in electrification. By 2026, Volkswagen aims to have the most extensive electric vehicle lineup among European automakers, ranging from an entry model priced under 25,000 euros to the new flagship ID.7, targeting an electric vehicle market share of 80% in Europe by 2030, and transitioning to a pure electric vehicle brand from 2033 onwards.”

Kai Grünitz, member of the Board of Management for Volkswagen Brand Development, mentioned, “The ID.7 sets a new benchmark for electric vehicle efficiency based on the MEB platform, aiming for a WLTP-rated range of up to 700km thanks to its excellent aerodynamic performance and significant enhancements in powertrain and thermal management system efficiency.”

The ID.7 is also the first model equipped with Volkswagen’s newly developed high-efficiency electric drive system. The new electric motor delivers a maximum output of 210kW (286 hp), making it the most powerful in the history of the Volkswagen ID. family. Depending on the battery specifications, the ID.7 offers various performance options.

The new electric drive system is optimized for energy efficiency in every aspect. Depending on the battery size, it provides a WLTP-rated range of up to 700km and a maximum charging capacity of up to 200kW. Therefore, the ID.7 is suitable not just for long-distance driving but especially for customers with high mileage or corporate customers.

With a length of 5 meters, the ID.7 is designed in the most efficient shape considering aerodynamic performance. The elegant coupe-style roofline not only adds beauty but also allows for an excellent drag coefficient of just 0.23, depending on the specifications. Additionally, the long wheelbase and short overhang contribute to a spacious environment for all passengers.

The ID.7 features a display concept that significantly enhances the user experience, incorporating customer feedback. The new system includes a 15-inch infotainment display, an augmented reality head-up display, always-visible air conditioning control buttons on the infotainment screen, customizable shortcut buttons, and a backlit touch slider.

Imelda Labe, board member responsible for Volkswagen sales, marketing, and after-sales, stated, “The ID.7 is a very important model for Europe, China, and North America. The ID.7 offers an attractive package that excites both existing customers and those experiencing Volkswagen for the first time, providing distinctiveness, premium comfort, and high utility with an array of cutting-edge technologies. This will leave a strong impression.”

The ID.7 is equipped with advanced comfort features that were previously only found in competitors’ premium models, such as new massage seats and an electronic dimming panoramic sunroof. The smart glass sunroof provides an electronic dimming function that allows users to switch between transparent and opaque modes via touch. Various features, including the sunroof, can also be controlled using the new IDA voice assistant through natural language commands.

The front seats of the ID.7 offer an optional adaptive seat Climatronic feature, a first for Volkswagen. This system provides heating, cooling, and drying functions according to the passenger’s needs, as well as massage functions certified by the German Spine Health Association. The available Harman Kardon sound system provides 700W of power with 14 high-end speakers, including a center speaker and a subwoofer in the trunk, delivering an amazing audio experience.

The ID.7 includes data-driven travel assist features that support distance control depending on the situation and lane changes (*limited to certain regions). The travel assist, developed jointly by Volkswagen and its software subsidiary CARIAD, provides lane change assistance at speeds over 90km/h while driving on the highway. This significantly reduces driver fatigue during travel.

The ID.7 offers various assistance features even in parking situations. Notably, the memory parking feature provides automated parking from distances of up to 50 meters, allowing drivers to monitor the parking process from inside the vehicle or externally via a smartphone app.

The new ID.7 is one of ten new electric vehicle models that Volkswagen plans to unveil by 2026.

This year, Volkswagen plans to showcase three models from the ID. family: the new ID.3, ID. Buzz long wheelbase, and ID.7. Additionally, they will introduce an electric compact SUV and the innovative ID.2all production version priced under €25,000 by 2026, thereby expanding its electrification lineup compared to competitors.

The ID.7 for Europe and North America will be produced at Volkswagen’s factory in Emden, Germany, while the Chinese version will be manufactured in local Chinese factories.
