BMW vs. Mercedes: A Thrilling Race for Dominance in the Korean Market

The gap between BMW and Mercedes has narrowed. As a result, Mercedes is now fiercely chasing BMW.

The Korea Imported Car Association reported on the 6th that the number of new registrations for imported passenger vehicles in February totaled 21,622 units, a 33.3% increase from January’s 16,222 units.

In terms of brand sales, BMW surpassed Mercedes to take the number one spot in sales for two consecutive months.

BMW recorded sales of 6,381 units, which is a 4.8% increase from the previous month’s 6,089 units. Mercedes, on the other hand, saw a significant rise to 5,519 units, marking a 90% increase from January’s 2,900 units.

By engine displacement, the number of registrations for vehicles below 2,000cc stood at 11,953 units (55.3%), indicating that more than half of new buyers of imported cars chose compact models due to lower maintenance costs. As for sales by origin, European models dominated with a total of 17,890 units (82.7%), reflecting a strong preference for European cars among imported vehicle buyers.

In terms of fuel type, gasoline vehicles accounted for 10,955 units (50.7%), making up half of the imported car market, while hybrids followed with 6,814 units (31.4%). Once praised as a clean engine option, diesel vehicles lagged behind with only 1,975 units (9.1%) sold.

The best-selling model in February was the BMW 5 Series (2,453 units), followed by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (1,624 units) and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (1,220 units).
