Chevrolet Trax Crossover: A Game Changer for the Compact SUV Segment

The real-world testing of Chevrolet’s highly anticipated Trax crossover has been captured by our publication this year.

On the afternoon of the 6th, we spotted the Chevrolet Trax crossover waiting for a signal in front of the Bupyeong GM Design Center. The Trax crossover features a family resemblance to the Trailblazer, showcasing a dynamic curve that flows from the A-pillar to the D-pillar.

The Trax crossover will be equipped with Chevrolet’s downsized 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Despite being a small 1.2-liter engine, the vehicle is sized like a compact SUV. With a body length of 4,536mm and a wheelbase of 2,700mm, it is longer and has more interior space than the Trailblazer (which measures 4,410mm in length and has a 2,640mm wheelbase). However, the Trax crossover stands at a height of 1,559mm, making it lower than the Trailblazer (1,660mm).

With its spacious interior and dynamic design, GM Korea aims to redefine the compact car market.

The Trax crossover has a planned annual production target of 500,000 units through the Changwon plant (280,000 units per year) and the Bupyeong plant (220,000 units per year). The Bupyeong plant is expected to commence production in the second quarter.

The reaction to the Trax crossover, a new addition to GM Korea’s lineup, exceeds expectations. The Trax, which has already been launched in the North American market, is unable to meet the demands even with full operation at the Changwon plant. A GM Korea representative stated that they are forecasting North American market demands every 10 months, saying, “The local response has been strong, and dealers are confident in their sales. Supply is the issue.”

The launch of the Trax crossover is seen as appropriate given the economic situation. With a prolonged global economic downturn, consumers looking to purchase vehicles are forced to cut budgets, making the Chevrolet Trax crossover an ideal model for this context.

The starting price for the Trax crossover in the US is $20,400 (approximately 26,928,000 KRW), making it an attractive option for consumers whose finances have been strained by the economic downturn. GM Korea emphasized, “In this era of tightened budgets due to the economic recession, the Trax crossover will serve as an alternative to quench consumers’ thirst for new vehicles.”
