Polestar 3 to Feature TMAP’s Advanced HD Mapping for Enhanced Autonomy

The Polestar 3 electric vehicle, scheduled for release in the third quarter of this year, will come equipped with TMAP’s precision HD mapping technology.

TMAP Mobility announced on the 2nd that it will provide its self-developed HD map, which has been constructed with precision, to Polestar Automotive Korea for the upcoming release of the premium large electric SUV, Polestar 3. The HD map is a 3D map created with centimeter-level accuracy, which is expected to play a central role in ensuring the safety of future autonomous vehicles.

The Polestar 3 will utilize centralized computing technology from Nvidia’s LiDAR system. By integrating the TMAP HD map, it will provide intricate spatial information for the decision-making process in autonomous driving, aiding precise decision-making during operation.

This HD map boasts performance elevated over 10 times compared to conventional navigation systems, providing accurate location data on road curvature, slope, and speed limit information at a level comparable to real roadway conditions. It will also contain detailed information previously unavailable in standard navigation, such as lane widths, fixed road obstacles, and center demarcation lines.

To implement the HD map, TMAP Mobility utilized a Mobile Mapping System (MMS) equipped with LiDAR and radar technologies, along with data collection and image recognition techniques, over the past two years. They have successfully established an HD map covering 100,000 kilometers across the country through the mapping process.

Drivers of vehicles equipped with the HD map will be able to receive highly accurate map data within a margin of error of 25 cm on highways and expressways nationwide. The Polestar 3, integrated with the TMAP HD map, is expected to launch domestically in the third quarter of this year.

Seo-ha Park, in charge of Future Mobility at TMAP Mobility, stated, “With the commercialization of autonomous vehicles imminent, the competition for developing HD maps is becoming increasingly intense,” and he added, “We will continue to demonstrate the outstanding technological competitiveness of the TMAP HD map in both domestic and international markets.”
