Revolutionizing Road Safety: TMAP Navigation Introduces Real-Time Ice Alert System

TMAP Navigation provides real-time ice information on major highways through voice and visual guidance to enhance safe driving. This is the first time that real-time road icing information based on weather observation data is offered through navigation systems.

Starting from the 10th, TMAP Mobility will collaborate with the Korea Meteorological Administration to provide ‘navigation-based road ice risk information’ specifically for the Jungbu Inland Expressway, allowing drivers to check road weather information in real-time.

Recognizing the potential danger of sudden occurrences of icy patches and fog that can expose drivers to accidents, TMAP Mobility has been working with the Korea Meteorological Administration to implement preventive measures for traffic accidents. The Korea Meteorological Administration has been discussing the provision of observation-based information regarding the atmosphere and road conditions collected in real-time with the navigation industry, and TMAP Mobility will be the first to feature the ice information.

As a result, drivers will receive audible warnings such as ‘There is an ice hazard area 300 meters ahead’ through TMAP Navigation, and they will also be able to visually confirm the information on the display. The road weather information service will be sequentially applied to the Jungbu Inland Expressway and the West Coast Expressway this year, with plans to expand it to 26 major expressways thereafter.

Yoo Hee-dong, head of the Korea Meteorological Administration, stated, “While the road hazard weather information service, which has just taken its first step, still has challenges regarding improving accuracy and service quality, I am confident that this service will greatly contribute to ensuring public safety from road hazard weather and reducing societal costs related to traffic accidents.”

Lee Jong-ho, CEO of TMAP Mobility, emphasized, “We will ensure optimal route guidance services for drivers while also focusing on preventing traffic accidents and securing safe driving. I expect that TMAP’s provision of road weather information service will be a significant first step in drastically reducing traffic accidents caused by black ice road slips.”
