Magna has secured a massive contract from GM to supply battery cases for the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. They plan to increase production at their St. Clair County, Michigan facility, which is currently manufacturing battery cases for the GMC Hummer EV.

Recently, Magna announced significant investment plans for the St. Clair facility to support the rapidly growing electric vehicle market. Production of these battery case products is expected to begin in the second half of 2023.

John O’Hara, president of Magna’s Body and Chassis group, stated, “The rapid change in market towards vehicle electrification opens numerous exciting growth opportunities for Magna, beyond the powertrain. We have been able to supply various battery cases to several OEMs based on our unique expertise. We are very proud to play an important role in GM’s next-generation electric truck.”

The battery cases, which are installed in all battery electric vehicles, house high-voltage batteries, electrical components, sensors, and connectors. These battery cases play a crucial role in contributing to the structural and safety aspects of the vehicle frame and protecting the battery components from potential impacts, heat, and immersion. Magna has advanced assembly development capabilities for steel, aluminum, and composite material configurations that include lightweight materials to meet customers’ specific requirements.
